1. Meta’s SAM 2: The New Model in Object Segmentation 🔍

Meta has just dropped SAM 2, their next-gen model for object segmentation in both images and videos, and it’s a total game-changer. With over 51,000 real-world videos and 600,000 masklets in its toolkit, SAM 2 can segment objects better and faster than ever, making it a must-have for creators and researchers alike.

Its ability to work seamlessly across different visual content means it’s breaking barriers in fields like medicine, environmental science, and even video editing!

2. Apple Uses Google TPUs To Train Apple Intelligence đź‘€

Apple just dropped a bombshell that their new Apple Intelligence system is powered by Google’s Tensor Processing Units, ditching the NVIDIA GPUs that have been used by many. In a freshly released 47-page technical paper, Apple revealed they’re using cloud TPU clusters to train their models while teasing a preview version of Apple Intelligence for select devices.

Meanwhile, industry giants like Meta and Alphabet are sweating over whether they’ve overspent on AI infrastructure

3. Meta Unleashes AI Studio for Creators: Chatbots Galore 🧑‍💻️

Meta has officially rolled out its AI Studio to all creators in the U.S., enabling them to create personalized chatbots with ease. This innovative tool allows creators to generate captions, format posts, and even develop AI versions of themselves for fan interaction across platforms like Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp.

Mark Zuckerberg emphasized that these chatbots can enhance community outreach, helping creators connect with their audience more effectively.

Should we make an Everyday AI bot or nah?

4. Canva Snags Leonardo.ai for Next-Level Visual Tools 🧑‍🎨️

Canva is acquiring Australian startup Leonardo.ai, which specializes in generative AI content, to boost its visual tool game! This deal means Canva will tap into Leonardo’s customizable text-to-image and video generators, while the startup continues its web platform as a standalone offering.

With this acquisition, Canva is gearing up to rival Adobe’s creative suite and could be a fresh alternative to Adobe’s Firefly models.

5. NVIDIA Unleashes AI Microservices for Industrial Digital Twins đź‘Ą

NVIDIA just dropped some jaw-dropping tech news at SIGGRAPH, unveiling their new OpenUSD microservices that are set to revolutionize how industries build digital twins and virtual worlds. With tools like USD Code and USD Search, developers can whip up 3D content and search vast libraries using natural language.

Foxconn and WPP are already on board, using these innovations to crank out virtual factories and creative pipelines at lightning speed.

6. UAE and US Congress Clash Over AI Deal with G42 and Microsoft 🇦🇪

The United Arab Emirates is throwing a wrench in the gears of Congressional meetings after concerns rose about the Emirati firm G42 potentially passing sensitive U.S. AI tech to China. A diplomatic showdown unfolded when the UAE Ambassador intervened to halt discussions, leaving lawmakers on edge about a $15 billion Microsoft investment that could cause tech secrets to slip through the cracks.

With rising tensions over U.S.-China tech competition, the Biden administration is keeping a close eye on this drama, especially after imposing export curbs on AI chips last year.

🦾How You Can Leverage:

AI: The boogeyman of our digital age?

Critics say it’ll replace us, or worse, control us.

Others? They think it’s just tech fluff.

But here’s the twist: They’re both off the mark.

Today, we’re joined by David Moschella, a seasoned tech veteran and Senior Fellow at the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation. (In other words, a seasoned tech vet with decades of experience.)

David is here to break down why AI’s critics are missing the point.

He’ll reveal how AI is more about collaboration than replacement, and why fears of job loss are largely overblown. Plus, we’ll dig into how AI can actually solve some of our biggest challenges, from healthcare to infrastructure.

Curious to know what the critics got wrong and why AI is our ally, not our enemy?

Let’s dive into David’s eye-opening perspectives

Let’s gooooooooo

1 – The West needs AI to stay ahead. 🌎️

Yeah, we’ve got an international audience here at Everyday AI. (Thanks y’all!)

But, many of us (our crew included) are from the U.S. And when it comes to the West’s ability to be a worldwide leader, you can’t do that without AI, David said.

We’ve gotta embrace AI like our future depends on it—because it actually does.

David painted a picture of AI not just as a cool new tech toy, but as a lifeline for tackling big challenges like aging populations and economic shifts.

Imagine AI helping us innovate in healthcare, boost our energy efficiency, and even manage our cities better.

Generative AI can be the key to that future, but only with ongoing advancements in the tech and without overarching legislation or overbearing regulation.

The AI’s gotta run free y’all.

Try this:

Just how important is AI technology to the U.S. (and the rest of the Western world) staying ahead of international competitors jostling for the top spots? It’s pretty much a top tech priority.

That’s not just us shooting steam as AI enthusiasts. Nope.

Take this study from Thomson Reuters, which is part of a three-part series that shows how important AI is when it comes to a worldwide economic outlook.

2 – AI won’t take every job from humans 💼

Ah, the hot-topic of the 2020s.

Will the big bad machines take our jobs?

(We’ve already given you our take on this.

David said it’s the same old story we've been hearing since the industrial revolution.

Remember the Luddites and their fear of textile mills? People have always worried that technology would eliminate jobs.

But guess what?

The economy adapts, expands, and new kinds of work emerge.

And as AI systems become more popular and powerful, the loud mumbles of people worried about AI replacing them will only get louder.

Because people have been worried about machines taking their jobs since, well, forever.

David reminds us that while there’s always a period of adjustment, the economy adapts and new jobs pop up.

Try this:

We loved this take from David: he said it may be best that some jobs be replaced by AI.

Aside from an aging population, he pointed out that we face declining birth rates and mass migrations, which can leave gaps in the workforce. AI and robotics can help fill these gaps, ensuring that essential services and industries continue to operate smoothly.

For a balanced view on how AI is reshaping the job market, check out this article from the World Economic Forum that tackles the question of if there will be enough future jobs with AI on the roster.

3 – AI isn't new, critics are misguided 📜

Most people have been snoozing on AI.

Like….for decades.

Many critics who either quickly dismiss or haphazardly go all-in on AI aren’t informed. David debunked the myth that AI is some brand-new disruptor. From neural networks in the 1940s to today’s advanced applications, AI has been evolving for decades.

You think the first AI chatbot was ChatGPT?

Nope. Try ELIZA from the 1960s.

Critics who view AI as a sudden, disruptive force are missing the historical context of its gradual development. Understanding this history helps in appreciating the current capabilities and future potential of AI without succumbing to exaggerated fears.

Try this:

Get a (metaphorical) grip on AI’s history to better understand its trajectory. Read up on how AI has evolved over the decades and how it’s been integrated into various industries. This knowledge will help you separate hype from reality and make more informed decisions about AI’s role in your life and work. For a comprehensive history of AI, read this article from the BBC.
