At this year’s Epic Systems Users Group Meeting, CEO Judy Faulkner took to the stage dressed as a swan, marking the kickoff of the event with a splash of whimsy.
The spotlight, however, was on the company’s ambitious plans to integrate over 100 artificial intelligence features into its health-care software, promising to simplify tasks for physicians and improve patient communication.
With tools that could transform how doctors draft messages and handle insurance claims, Epic aims to streamline cumbersome processes that bog down healthcare professionals today.
Ideogram 2.0 Review
Is there a new Midjourney competitor on the scene?
Ideogram has just released its 2.0 update and it’s pretty dang good.
Does it compete with Midjourney? We take a look.
Check out today's AI in 5.
🦾How You Can Leverage:
That mug you’re drinking from?
The coffee inside.
The table you’re setting it down on.
The remote you grab for to change the channel on that 65” TV that somehow fits on the wall?
All of it is impacted by the global supply chain.
And what’s impacting the global supply chain?
You guessed it, shorties: AI. And in a big way.
Evan Smith helped explain it all to us on today’s show.
He’s the CEO and co-founder of Altana, a company that provides AI-driven insights and visibility for managing global supply chains and compliance.
The company, recently valued at $1 billion, helps governments, enterprises, logistics companies and everyone in between to create a smarter AI-enabled supply chain.
Whether you’re in those industries or not, smarter supply chains benefit us all.
So what’s the future hold? And how has AI already changed how the world does business?
Let’s find out 👇
1 – Automate the Paperwork Nightmare 📑
One huge issue with the global supply chain?
Many key players across the globe are still going old school with pen and paper.
Seriously.
Evan dropped a bombshell we weren’t prepared for: the customs brokerage industry, which is essentially just humans reading documents and filing paperwork, is a $150 billion per year business.
That's billion with a B, folks.
Yikes.
So whether you’re in logistics or the supply chain, or your company contributes on the front or back end, you’ve gotta not only go digital, but go all in on AI.
Picture this: instead of armies of people squinting at PDFs and typing data into forms, you've got AI assistants that can read, understand, and process these documents faster than you can say "shipment delayed."
We're talking about taking a process that used to take hours or even days and condensing it into minutes or seconds.
Try this:
AI can help sort and declare goods for governments way faster and with fewer mistakes, making it easier to handle trillions of dollars of cross-border transactions.
Even if you’re a small guy in the big supply chain pond, you can use AI like yesterday.
Don’t worry if part of your logistics day-to-day still involves pen and pad. Start small.
Take a stack of receipts, invoices, or any other repetitive documents you deal with regularly. Use a free online OCR (Optical Character Recognition) tool to digitize them, then feed the text into a large language model like GPT-4.
(Or, just upload the docs themselves and have ChatGPT or Claude do the dirty work.)
Ask it to summarize the key points or extract specific data. Have your LLM of choice turn that data into spreadsheets, reports, follow-up emails, etc.
Compare the time this takes to your usual process. Now imagine this scaled up to handle millions of customs declarations or shipping manifests. That's the power of AI in the supply chain world.
Oh, and go check out this list of some of the best AI tools for people in the supply chain and logistic industries.
Talk about winning time back.
2 – Map Your Product’s Global DNA 🧬
Yeah, that coffee mug didn’t go from Nespresso to your end table.
Products oftentimes take a long and complicated journey to get from point A to point Z.
Evan revealed that AI can now render a "bottoms up, living, breathing view of the global supply chain."
This means you can trace every component of your product from raw material to finished good, uncovering hidden risks and opportunities.
Try this:
This isn’t some future tech you have to wait for.
A recent GEP study showed that 42% of businesses are planning investments in real-time tracking and monitoring within supply chains.
Here’s one way you could start.
Pick one product in your company (or one you use daily if you're not in the industry). Use an AI-powered supply chain mapping tool like Altana to trace its journey.
Look for surprises:
Where are the raw materials sourced?
How many countries does it pass through?
Is forced labor used?
Are there any single points of failure?
What is the product’s carbon footprint?
This exercise can reveal vulnerabilities you never knew existed and help you make more informed decisions, whether you're a business owner or a conscious consumer.
3 – Future-proof Your Supply Chain 💪
Remember when COVID-19 hit and suddenly toilet paper became more valuable than gold? That's what happens when supply chains aren't prepared for the unexpected.
(Also, what was the highest you paid? We’re recalling like $20 for 6 rolls. And not even that fluffy Charmin quadruple stuffed good stuff.)
On today’s show, Evan stressed that every C-suite and board he talks to has supply chain resilience as a top priority.
Why?
Because in today's interconnected world, a hiccup in one part of the globe can cause a full-blown supply chain flu halfway across the planet.
That’s where AI becomes your crystal ball.
Look at you, supply chain wizard!
Imagine being able to run simulations of your entire supply chain, testing it against every possible disaster scenario.
What happens if a key supplier's factory burns down?
How about if a major shipping route gets blocked by a stuck container ship?
Try this:
Simulate this, shorties.
One great part of GenAI and LLMs doing a lot of our mundane tasks?
It gives us more time to focus on the meaningful, like putting human minds to work to troubleshoot supply chain’s biggest problems.
Conduct a "stress test" thought experiment for your business or household.
What's your biggest vulnerability to supply chain disruptions?
It could be as simple as your favorite coffee being out of stock, or as complex as a key business component becoming unavailable.
Use AI-powered news aggregators to track potential disruptions in that area. Set up alerts for key terms.
This proactive approach can help you stay ahead of potential issues, whether you're running a multinational corporation or just trying to keep your pantry stocked.
Wanna dive in even deeper?
Go check this recent study from Georgetown that talks about AI’s evolving role in resilient supply chains. (Altana was featured in this one!)
