🤷‍♂️ What’s Going On and Why It Matters:

So what happens if AI implementation is … successful?

Do people lose their jobs?

How can AI be implemented ethically?

Do roles change?

Does the company start to focus on new revenue-driving initiatives?

We don’t have the answers, but we talked to an expert to help us go through the stickiest of questions regarding ethical leadership in implementing AI in the workplace.

Madison Mohns is an AI Product Manager at Indeed, and she joined us live to tackle these tough subjects and more.

And tackle them, she did.

Today’s episode was one where we had so many notes and takeaways that it’s hard to jot em all down.

Madison talked about not only how Indeed is using AI to create better relationships between employers and employees, but also went all-in on ethical implications behind AI implementation.

Today’s convo was deep and impactful, yet light-hearted and topical. A must watch/listen.

If you need the tl;dr version, here some highlights

  • Madison Mohns' role as an AI product manager at Indeed

  • Use of machine learning algorithms in bridging the gap between employers and job seekers

  • Impact of generative AI on the future of work and average jobs

  • Ethical implications and practical effects of implementing AI in the workplace

  • Discussion of "techno solutionism" and its application to AI in the workplace, particularly in HR tech

  • Challenges of training employees to use AI ethically and addressing generational differences in technology comfort

  • Importance of keeping humans in the process of AI development and considering the impact on experts

That’s just some appetizers y’all. Go feast on the main course.

Now, let’s break down what it all means.

🦾How You Can Leverage:

No getting around this — implementing AI in an ethical way is the hot topic of 2024.

Luckily, we had an AI expert from Indeed give us a preview of what’s ahead.

Here’s the big fat elephant in the room: If AI implementation goes according to plan, companies will have tough decisions to make.

- Cut a bunch of employees

- Or change the work employees (and the company itself) do

Let’s tap into Madison’s insights, which serve as a first-line of defense in the battle against the incoming and unavoidable AI infiltration into the workplace.

1 – Understand AI’s impact ️💡

Like what Madison said, you’ve gotta look downstream. If you’re a decision-maker looking to ethically implement AI, you’ve gotta think about the long-term impact.

What happens when AI implementation works, and some employee jobs become redundant.

Madison talked about the potential displacement and impact on employees, emphasizing the importance of envisioning the future of their roles.

She also stressed the need to acknowledge the balance of gains and losses in AI implementation and the imperative nature of considering the impact on individual employees and the company as a whole. Like she said, AI implementation isn’t always a win-win, y’all.

Try this: Recommend reading straight from Madison, check out this article on the automation charade. With some deep thoughts on the ‘rise of robots’ in the workplace, this article gives both insightful context yet a high-level overview of what AI automation can mean for the workforce.

2 – Involve humans who use the AI 🙋

You know who makes rules on AI for organizations?

Senior leadership and boards.

You know who’s probably using GenAI the least in the workplace?

Senior leadership and boards.

With that in mind, Madison emphasized the need for increased human conversations around AI use.

Try this: If you’re a decision maker, make sure to include input from all levels of the organization — including new employees, seasoned vets and entry-level positions. Not only will this increase the likelihood of a more ethical rollout, but it also will shed light on AI blind spots that leadership is likely unaware of.

Here’s a great guide on how to have tough conversations with employees about best practices for AI use.

3 – Prioritize consent and attribution

When AI works, who gets the credit?

Deep, right?

When AI implementation goes according to plan, the company becomes WAY more efficient, effective and (likely) profitable.

Like, printing money kinda profitable.

Madison said that orgs should not only be prepared to change employees’ roles and its own focus, but leaders should also recognize the people who made it possible.

Try this: By acknowledging and compensating those individuals, organizations can uphold ethical principles and create a culture of fairness and recognition. Yeah, you read that right. Compensating individuals who help create AI-powered organizational velocity and efficiencies. We can get behind that.

More cheddar if you make things betta. (*Boston accent*)

🚨 BONUS ALERT 🚨

There were SO many good takes today, we had to share a lil carousel with even more takeaways.
