Can AI actually be used for good?

It’s the number one question associated with AI.

(Well, after that whole ‘Will it take my job!?’ query.)

One of the biggest misconceptions around AI is the fear that it'll take over everything and only cause destruction.

But what can AI do to help us?

Mark Minevich, a UN advisor, Chief Digital AI Strategist, and Global Social Innovation Technology Executive & Chair President at Going Global Ventures Inc., joins us to discuss strategies for ethical and sustainable AI development.

🤷‍♂️ What’s Going On and Why It Matters:

AI’s not all bad robots taking our jobs.

Nah.

Actually, artificial intelligence can actually help solve some of the world’s most pressing problems.

While we normally tackle how Generative AI can help grow your company or career, today we zoomed out.

Like — way out.

Today we were lucky to talk with Mark Minevich, whose accomplishments and involvement in the AI space are legit longer than this newsletter.

As a best-selling author, AI advocate, UN advisor, Co-Chair of AI for the Planet Alliance (and so much more), Mark brings an in-depth and well-rounded perspective on how to use AI for good.

If you missed today’s episode, we cannot exaggerate this enough — go give it a watch/listen!

Mark’s energy negated the need for much morning coffee. Or maybe we needed a bit more to jot down all the hot takes? ☕

What did we learn?

A whole lot on using AI for good, the importance of governance in AI development, and balancing AI-lead job creation and AI-lead job displacement.

What else?

  • Government and private sector responsibility in providing digital education to everyone in urban cities

  • Providing safe, secure, trustworthy, and fair AI

  • Lack of digital capacity and the need for preparation for the new economy

  • Competition between countries like the US, European Union, and China for AI dominance

  • Significant increase in AI funding, with examples of equity funding and AI unicorns

  • Advocacy for capital to go into AI for good and social innovation

…. and a WHOLE lot more!

Today’s episode is a hotbed for facts, problems and solutions.

Let’s get after it. 👇

🦾How You Can Leverage:

Let’s get this one outta the way, y’all — today’s episode is nearly impossible to recap.

Mark has an extensive background and is helping shape the global conversation on using AI for good.

And while we covered a host of topics, here’s our favorite takeaways to work toward using AI for good.

1 – Sustainability > Efficiency

To be honest, we’re in this column all the time. One of the most rewarding aspects of AI is it can help us become better at our jobs, saving us money and time.

Efficiency has become the name of the game.

Not so fast, Mark said. If the majority of corporations are only focused on efficiencies, then that can place profit above all else. Instead, Mark suggested it’s important to focus on sustainability.

Try this:
By shifting the focus from purely corporate efficiencies to sustainable solutions, we can create a positive impact on society and the planet as a whole.

Go check out some projects that focus on sustainability from AI For Good, which Mark serves as the Chair of the Executive Committee.

2 – Smarter cities = better planet 🌎

Remember when we said we’d zoom out on this one? We weren’t joking y’all. Many of us experience AI at the keyboard level. Like… whoa! Check what this AI made.

But what if we take a planet-level view of artificial intelligence? One way to combat the climate crisis is to use AI to create smarter cities

Try this:
Oh, you really wanna dive deep on this one? Then go check out Mark’s newly released book, Our Planet Powered by AI.

3 – We can all use AI for good 💪

Sure, Mark probably has a little more sway than some of us when it comes to using AI for good.

But we all can.

How?

Mark kept it simple — use AI daily and use it for good.

Try this: Stop simply reading or watching about Generative AI. Instead, start using it daily. Mark encouraged people to use Generative AI tools daily and put them to practice. Learn new skills so that you and your company stay relevant in an ever-changing world.

Mark mentioned that AI is 10% generative AI and 20% technology, with the remaining 70% focused on collaboration, culture, applications, and solutions. So, use AI so you can focus on that 70%.
