🦾How You Can Leverage:

For neurodivergent people, GenAI may mean a little something different.

Here’s why: Generative AI can be a beacon of hope and a powerful force for people with neurodivergence.

It’s about more than productivity or increasing revenue.

That’s why we tapped into insights from Dr. Maureen Dunne, a respected educator, author and activist for the neurodivergent community.

She joined the Everyday AI show to not only better explain neurodivergence, but also to shine light on unique ways that AI can help transform the workplace for people who are neurodivergent.

Let’s break it down simply — neurodivergence can include certain conditions such as Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia and other neurological conditions.

And as mental health awareness has increased in recent years, so too has the awareness around neurodivergence.

Maureen helped us not only understand the challenges neurodivergent people face day-to-day, but also how the intersection of neurodiversity and artificial intelligence is opening up a world of possibilities.

From enhancing communication to fostering inclusivity, the positive impact of this AI is reshaping workplaces and paving the way for a more diverse and innovative future.

Ready to dive in?

Let’s break down the highlights from today’s convo

1 – AI can improve employment outcomes

Sometimes, neurodivergent people can suffer in silence.

Maureen mentioned the high unemployment in the neurodivergent community, saying it is more than 30% compared to 4% of the general population

There’s many reasons why, but some of the main reasons are the current workforce isn’t always set up to be inclusive enough to accommodate for challenges faced by neurodivergent people.

Maureen cited biases in traditional interview processes and how companies evaluate talent, which often overlook neurodivergent people.

And once in a role, the day-to-day tasks can be much harder.

Something seemingly simple, like replying to an email, can be a time-consuming and anxiety-inducing task for neurodivergent people.

Maureen talked about how AI can make a hugely positive impact here. By using Large Language Models as a sounding board, neurodivergent people can ensure their communication is clear and take ease in getting an assist from GenAI.

2 – GenAI can be a learning sidekick 🦸

In today’s show, we dove into the concept of personalized learning with AI.

Traditional learning in schools and workplaces may not be suited toward neurodivergent people.

So, how can AI help?

With personalized learning.

As an example, for an ADHD student struggling with focus, ChatGPT could break down complex topics into short, engaging segments with interactive quizzes tailored to their attention span.

Or, a dyslexic individual might receive customized reading material from an AI system, which adjusts font size and background color for easier reading, and provide text-to-speech audio versions to complement the text.

This Medium breakdown from Sarah Mohs is an excellent guide on how neurodiverse people can use Generative AI to work smarter.

3 – AI can highlight under utilized skillset 💡

Maureen referenced some excerpts in her upcoming book, The Neurodiversity Edge, where she shares how the future of work is quickly changing.

As computational power and AI may take away linear tasks away from humans in the future, Maureen said it’s important for all of us to focus on how nonlinear thinking could be better leveraged with AI in the future.

Maureen said that AI can help highlight some undervalued skills in neurodivergent people such as rapid idea generation or nonlinear problem solving.
