1. OpenAI Acquires Jony Ive’s AI Hardware Startup for $6.4B 👀
In a bold move to deepen its hardware footprint, OpenAI announced it is buying Jony Ive’s AI startup io for about $6.4 billion in an all-equity deal, with OpenAI already owning 23% of the company. Ive, the legendary designer behind Apple’s iPhone and MacBook Air, will take on significant creative and design responsibilities across OpenAI.
This acquisition comes just weeks after OpenAI’s $3 billion purchase of AI-assisted coding tool Windsurf, highlighting the company’s aggressive strategy to lead the generative AI race against rivals like Google and xAI by blending AI software with cutting-edge hardware.
2. Google Rolls Ads Into AI Search Mode 📢️
Google is now testing ads integrated directly into its AI-powered Search “AI Mode,” showing relevant ads alongside AI-generated answers to user queries. This move, announced Wednesday and reported by TechCrunch, puts ads front and center in what many see as the future of search, starting with U.S. users on desktop and mobile.
Advertisers using Google’s existing campaigns will automatically be eligible, signaling a new revenue stream tied tightly to AI interactions. While this could help users discover business tools or shopping options, it also raises concerns as 36% of U.S. adults say AI-driven ads could make them less likely to buy from those brands.
3. NVIDIA CEO Backs Trump’s Reversal on AI Chip Export Curbs 🇺🇸
NVIDIA’s Jensen Huang slammed Biden-era export controls on AI chips to China as a “failure,” revealing his company’s market share in China has plummeted from 95% to 50% since 2021.
Huang praised the Trump administration’s recent move to ease some restrictions, arguing that limiting AI tech flow only fueled China’s self-reliance and accelerated its domestic AI advancements. This shift highlights the fierce global race for AI leadership, where restricting technology may backfire by boosting rival innovation.
4. Mistral Unveils Devstral, a New Open AI Model for Coding 🧑💻️
Mistral has just launched Devstral, an AI coding model that outperforms competitors like Google’s Gemma 3 27B on coding benchmarks, and is available under a permissive Apache 2.0 license for commercial use. Designed to run efficiently on accessible hardware like a single NVIDIA RTX 4090 or a Mac with 32GB RAM, Devstral aims to boost developer productivity by handling complex codebase exploration and multi-file edits.
This release comes amid growing demand for AI coding assistants, with Devstral positioned as a lightweight yet powerful tool for both local and cloud deployment.
5. US-China Tensions Ignite Over Huawei AI Chips 😬
Just weeks after easing trade tensions, the US and China are clashing again, this time over export restrictions on Huawei’s Ascend AI chips. China’s Commerce Ministry warned it might take legal action against enforcement of US rules that initially forbade using these chips “anywhere in the world,” a phrase the US Commerce Department later softened.
This dispute highlights the ongoing geopolitical struggle around semiconductor technology, crucial for AI development and national security.
6. Microsoft Build Disrupted, Confidential Walmart AI Plans Leaked 🚨
During a recent Microsoft Build event, protesters interrupted a talk on AI security, unintentionally exposing confidential internal chats revealing Walmart’s plans to ramp up use of Microsoft’s Entra and AI Gateway services. The disruption, led by former Microsoft employees protesting the company’s ties to Israel, highlights ongoing tensions around tech ethics and corporate responsibility.
This leak confirms Walmart’s deepening reliance on Microsoft’s AI tools, signaling a major push in enterprise AI adoption that could influence competitive dynamics in retail tech.
🦾How You Can Leverage:
Remember early 2024?
Google was just fighting for its place on the AI podium next to OpenAI, Microsoft and Anthropic.
Fast forward like 16 months?
Google kicked over the podium and took the whole dang game over.
Google is shipping AI updates, LLM upgrades and new ways to work by the dozens.
How big were the announcements at their recent Google I/O conference?
So big that we had to break the updates up into two episodes as we go over our top 15 AI updates from Google’s I/O conference.
(And how it might change how we work.)
First up?
Numbers 15-8. (Join us tomorrow for numbers 7-1!)
Ready to get educated?
Here we gooooooooo
15 – Imagen 4: Say Good-Bye To Garbage Stock Photos Forever 😶🌫️
Ever seen AI-generated images that actually look REAL? Not just "pretty good for AI" but "wait, that's AI?!"
That's Imagen 4.
These images look like they were shot on professional cameras with perfect lighting. And unlike Midjourney (which straight up "doesn't care" about text rendering), Imagen 4 handles text in images beautifully.
Availability: Rolling out now in the Gemini app + coming to Google Workspace. Requires Google AI Pro ($20/month) or Ultra ($250/month).
Business Impact: Trash those boring stock photos on your website TODAY.
Create custom visuals that look like you hired an amazing photographer.
Want better AI videos? Start with Imagen 4 images as your foundation.
14 – Chrome Gets Gemini Superpowers (Finally!) 🎯
Chrome is about to catch up to what Microsoft Edge has been doing for a YEAR plus.
But it's going beyond just summarizing pages in-browser with AI.
Soon, the Gemini-Chrome duo will actually navigate websites FOR YOU. Like having an invisible assistant who knows how to click buttons and fill forms.
Availability: Available now for Google AI Pro ($19.99/month) and Ultra subscribers; English language only initially.
Business Impact: Stop wasting hours on repetitive web tasks. Let Chrome handle your research while you focus on what humans do best.
13 – Email Magic That Even Impressed Sundar Pichai🧍
This feature was so good, Google's CEO specifically called it out in his keynote.
It creates email responses based on:
Your unique writing style (it mimics YOU)
Context from previous emails
Data pulled straight from your Google Drive files
Availability: Launching in Google Labs July 2025. Web-only and English-only at first.
Business Impact: Got 2,300+ unread emails like some of us? (The shame!)
This tool will slash through your inbox by crafting responses that sound exactly like you wrote them – while automatically pulling in pricing, details, and data from your Drive files.
No more digging through spreadsheets to answer simple questions.
12 – NotebookLM: Your Documents Just Became Podcasts and Videos
NotebookLM won "tool of the year" on Everyday AI in 2024 for a reason.
It’s straight up revolutionary.
And now, NotebookLM is even better after two big I/O updates.
Now you can choose the length of the viral AI Audio Overview Deep Dive podcasts where it transforms your boring documents into engaging podcasts with two AI hosts who sound surprisingly human.
Choose your length: quick (5 min), standard (10 min), or deep dive (20 min).
Video generation is dropping soon too. It won’t be cinema quality video, but it should still be a new way to learn more subjects faster and better.
IT 👏 KEEPS 👏 GOING 👏
In case you missed this year's #GoogleIO keynote, we made a notebook summarizing everything here: g.co/notebooklm/io2…
AND, given how much you guys are loving video overviews (coming soon!), we made one for this year's consumer keynote announcements.

11 – Gemini Diffusion: The SPEED Demon For Technical Teams🧍
This isn't your regular language model.
Instead of working left-to-right like traditional LLMs that are next token predictors on steroids, Gemini Diffusion starts with noise and refines everything at once – like how AI images are generated.
Result? 4-5X FASTER responses for math and coding.
Will it be useful for everything in the short-term? No.
Is it a completely new way that LLMs can work? Yes.
Availability: Limited preview with waitlist.
Business Impact: Your technical teams will solve problems in seconds instead of minutes.
When you're debugging code or solving complex equations, this speed difference is MASSIVE.
10 – Real-Time Translation: Global Business Just Got WAY Easier🧍

No awkward pauses. No robotic voices.
You speak English, they hear Spanish. They respond in Spanish, you hear English. Magic.
Availability: Initially for Google AI Pro/Ultra subscribers. Starting with Spanish/English, more languages are coming.
Business Impact: Expand globally without language barriers holding you back.
Talk to clients, partners, and teams worldwide as if everyone spoke the same language.
This completely changes international business.
9 – Gemini App: Deep Research Just Got WAY Smarter
Gemini's Deep Research now accepts PDFs and images as starting points.
Translation: You can upload company docs and have AI research based on YOUR proprietary info.
Even better? With the recent upgrade to Gemini 2.5, Deep Research now uses a "thinking model" that can change direction mid-research when it discovers a better path.
Availability: Rolling out to iOS and Android now. Core features free. Premium features only available on Pro and Ultra plans.
Business Impact: Start your workday with AI that thinks like a top-tier research assistant.
Feed it your company data and watch it deliver insights that adapt and evolve as it learns more.
8 – Gemma 3N: The Tiny AI That’s Secretly REVOLUTIONARY
This might be the most game-changing announcement nobody's talking about.
Gemma 3N is just 4-billion parameters (tiny!) yet performs nearly identically to Claude 3.7 Sonnet in blind tests.
Lettuce repeat that.
A model small enough to run on your PHONE is matching one of the world's most powerful AI systems.
And it runs 100% on your device. No cloud needed. WTF.
Availability: Preview available now. Free for developers to download and customize.
Business Impact: This solves the #1 enterprise AI concern: data privacy.
Run powerful AI directly on devices without sending sensitive info to the cloud.
Fine-tune it with your company data for a completely private AI solution that works offline.
