🦾How You Can Leverage:

GenAI is more than using ChatGPT.

And it can be used both for good and for bad. 👀

Whether you see it or not, Generative AI and large language models are being used to both launch cyber attacks yet also help protect us all from those same attacks.

A bit confusing, right?

Luckily, Glen Pendley gave us the GenAI cyber security 101.

Glen is the Chief Technology Officer at Tenable, one of the largest cybersecurity firms in the U.S.

While traditional AI — deep learning and machine learning — have been used for decades in cybersecurity, GenAI, and large language models are changing the cyber game.

It’s not all good, though.

While Generative AI makes it easier than ever before for good guys like Tenable to detect threats, the bad guys are leveraging the exact same tech to up their game as well.

Here’s our main takeaways, and what you need to know about how GenAI in cyber security impacts you:

1 – Personal cyber hygiene is needed 🧼

Sounds simple enough, but Glen reminded us all that this is the low-hanging fruit that cyber attackers look for.

It’s often the simplest things, like outdated software, that give the bad guys an opening they’re looking for.

Try this:
Here’s the 101 - keep your software updated through official channels. Everything from the browser and software you use daily to the operating system or even your company website, keeping your hardware and software updated is the first line of defense in cyber security.

2 – Phishing is more sophisticated 🧐

Gone are the days of overly generic phishing emails, laced with poor grammar and confusing messages about winning the lottery.

(Still waiting on my $3.7 million prize on that one, random prince from random country from 2003!)

Generative AI has empowered attackers to craft highly convincing and targeted phishing attempts. They can use AI-generated text and audio to mimic the writing and speaking styles of legitimate contacts, making it more challenging to discern the authenticity of messages.

Try this:

3 – Cyber security is changing rapidly 🔀

The ugly side of Generative AI?

Deepfakes.

When looking at the near-future intersection of cybersecurity and GenAI, Glen didn’t hesitate when talking about deepfakes being one of the most concerning issues.

The emergence of deepfake technology poses a significant challenge in cybersecurity, as it can be used to create highly convincing fake content, including video content that looks and behaves just like the real person.

Try this: Get ready for a BUNCH of that in the coming months during the U.S. election cycle. We talked a bit already about deepfake tech with D-ID, but here’s a helpful guide from MIT on spotting deepfakes.
