1. OpenAIās MLE-bench: A New Test for AI Skills in Data Science š
OpenAI has just launched MLE-bench, a groundbreaking benchmark designed to evaluate AI systems using 75 real-world Kaggle competitions, pushing the boundaries of machine learning engineering.
While their latest model, o1-preview, showed impressive results, achieving medal-worthy performance in 16.9% of tasks, it still revealed significant gaps in creativity and adaptability compared to human data scientists.
2. NVIDIA's Blackwell Chips Sold Out for 12 Months š¤Æ
NVIDIA's next-gen AI processors, dubbed Blackwell, are flying off the shelves, with production on schedule and demand set to last for the next year. Analysts from Morgan Stanley report that NVIDIA is entering a robust long-term investment phase in AI, predicting a powerful surge in 2025.
With NVDA stock nearing a buy point of 140.76, itās catching the attention of investors, solidifying its position as a top pick among semiconductor stocks. This news not only reflects NVIDIA's strong market presence but also underscores the growing importance of AI technologies across various industries.
3. New AI Scam Targets Gmail Users š©
A recent warning from Microsoft consultant Sam Mitrovic highlights an alarming new trend in AI-driven scams targeting Gmail users. Mitrovic recounted a frightening experience where he almost fell for a sophisticated phishing attack, complete with a convincing AI-generated voice impersonating Google support.
The incident serves as a stark reminder that even the most vigilant users can be deceived by these evolving tactics, which leverage urgency and trust to extract sensitive information. As hackers refine their methods, it's crucial for individuals to stay alert and utilize verification tools to protect their accounts and personal data effectively.
4. TikTok Makes Major Cuts For AI Future āļø
In a significant shift towards automation, TikTok is laying off hundreds of employees, primarily in Malaysia, as it increasingly relies on AI for content moderation. Although the exact number remains undisclosed, reports suggest that fewer than 500 jobs are affected, following previous cuts earlier this year that impacted over 1,300 positions globally.
This move signals a broader trend in the tech industry where companies are streamlining operations to enhance efficiency, which could lead to changes in job landscapes across social media platforms.
5. AWS CEO Speaks on Amazonās AI Strategy š§
New AWS CEO Matt Garman is steering Amazon's generative AI focus toward cost efficiency and flexibility, setting it apart from competitors like Microsoft and Google, who are pouring billions into various flashy models. Garman emphasizes the importance of customer data and intellectual property as key differentiators, while also revealing Amazon's five-year plan to develop custom silicon for enhanced performance.
As AWS Bedrock gains traction, Garman notes a surge in developers building on the platform, suggesting a promising future for businesses looking to leverage AI. However, he warns of the growing energy demands of AI, hinting that nuclear power may be the necessary solution to meet the skyrocketing electricity consumption

š¦¾How You Can Leverage:
Could Generative AI keep us safer from dangerous weather?
With the recent devastating storms roaring across the U.S., this question was on our minds.
So, we called on the help from the big brains powering the future of weather.
Mike Pritchard joined Everyday AI to talk all things climate forecasting and weather prediction. Mike is the Director of Clime Simulation Research at NVIDIA.
(You knowā¦. That little company thatās about to overtake Apple as the most valuable company in the world?)
And while most of us know NVIDIA as the GPU maker thatās literally powering the Generative AI revolution, their reach spans broad sectors.
Like being an integral piece of the future of weather prediction.
Can Generative AI completely reshape how we view weather? Can it help us be more prepared for severe weather and natural disasters?
We all have questions.
Grab your reading glasses, and letās get safer yāall. š
1 ā Todayās pollution lives for 100 years šØ
Were we the only ones shocked by this?
When it comes to protecting the climate (and forecasting its future), itās important to know the lasting impact of the decisions we make today.
Mike said that research shows pollutants stick around for nearly a century.
Yikes.
And all of the increased fossil fuel emissions lead to a warmer climate and increasingly severe weather.
NVIDIA is trying to use its AI tech to better understand this impact.
Try this:
Mike filled us in on how NVIDIAās research initiatives are playing a huge part in helping the worldās weather experts get a better grasp on our changing climate.
Two big initiatives:
Earth-2: A digital twin of Earth that simulates global weather and climate and StormCast, An AI model that can help predict mesoscale weather events up to 6 hours in advance.
2 ā The weather world needs accuracy šÆ
We all know the joke.
The weather guy or gal is the only person who can be wrong 50% of the time and still keep their jobs.
Why?
Because traditional weather modeling hasnāt been able to keep pace with a rapidly evolving climate.
In short, Mike explained that every six hours, meteorologists launch balloons and gather data from satellites and ground sensors to predict the weather.
They use this information to create models, but because weather is chaotic, predictions can vary widely.
Then, the weather people and apps we all use pick from about 6 to 12 different weather models to help make their predictions.
Hence, the sometimes off-kilter forecasts, especially for severe events like the recent hurricanes and tropical storms weāve been experiencing.
Thereās a strong need for better predictions as climate change causes more extreme weather.
Entering the Chat: Generative AI.
Try this:
Mike said the new injection of Generative AI is already having HUGE impacts on expertsā ability to understand and predict weather.
AI Models: NVIDIAās global AI weather model has disrupted traditional forecasting methods, helping organizations like the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting improve accuracy.
Probabilistic Predictions: Generative AI allows for the creation of multiple possible outcomes, rather than just a single prediction. This gives a fuller picture of what might happen.
Speed and Efficiency: AI models run simulations up to 1,000 times faster than traditional methods, enabling real-time updates and larger ensembles of predictions.
Skill Comparison: The StormCast model shows skill comparable to NOAAās high-resolution models, providing more accurate forecasts during severe weather.
You can read more about StormCast here, and dive into Earth2 here.
3 ā More AI = more insights = safer futures š
AI and science canāt stop todayās weather.
But it can make us more aware of our role and make positive changes.
And AIās most important short-term gain?
Faster and more accurate predictions ahead of extreme weather events.
Mike emphasized that AI can improve this by providing more accurate and timely forecasts, helping us better prepare for unpredictable weather.
Try this:
NVIDIA's StormCast uses AI to create high-resolution weather models that can predict storms more accurately than traditional methods.
And because governments and meteorological agencies can tap into NVIDIAās AI-powered insights, future weather preparedness goes up.
That means quicker updates on storm paths and intensity. With AI, meteorologists can run many simulations at once, giving better insights into possible outcomes.
This helps communities prepare for severe weather, increasing safety and reducing damage.
