🦾How You Can Leverage:

It’s hard for women to break into AI roles.

How can we change that?

It starts with important conversations, and that’s actually what we had on today’s show with Dona Fanara.

Dona is the VP of Women Impact Tech, a group that aims to advance women in technology.

Here’s what we learned — women have the deck stacked against them when it comes to breaking into AI and tech roles.

One of the main reasons?

Bias.

For decades, tech and AI roles have been thought of as male-dominated fields, perpetuating the stereotype that women are less capable in these roles.

Wrong.

This bias often leads to fewer opportunities for women in AI and tech industries, deepening the divide even more.

So here’s what you need to know from our conversation today with Dona on what needs to be done.

1 – Find a network and mentor 👥

When women are few and far between in highly visible AI roles, it’s even more important for women in AI and tech roles to network with their peers.

It can’t be an afterthought, though.

Dona said that because women face ongoing bias in the tech and AI space and it can be more difficult for them to be promoted, networking and mentorship aren’t just nice-to-haves.

They’re required.

Try this:
Speaking of women in AI and tech, we’ve had some fantastic women on the Everyday AI show.

Here’s a few other episodes from women in tech and AI roles who are worth connecting with. (And listening to their shows.)

2 – More resources from corporate 🏢

Sometimes change comes from the bottom up.

Sometimes, it needs to be pushed from the top down.

Dona encouraged companies to take on initiatives at the corporate level to encourage change and increase representation for women in tech and AI roles.

It can start simply, with Employee Resource Groups around elevating more women into tech and AI roles.

Dona also said some of that responsibility should be shouldered by HR departments and DEI initiatives.

With enough buy-in and feedback, Dona said corporations can start to level the playing field.

Try this:
IBM has an in-depth guide on how companies can foster a better environment for women to thrive in AI and tech roles.

And if you want to see a more landscape of women in tech and AI roles?

This page not only has a bevy of important stats but also links to other resources and studies on women in tech.

3 – Start younger 👩

The approach to getting more women in tech and AI roles is twofold: we have to address the current corporate culture but also pave the way for a better future.

Dona highlighted the importance of initiatives to get girls and younger women into tech fields.

A reactive approach alone won’t cut it. You’ve gotta be proactive.

Try this:
Berkeley has free programs for girls and young women to advance in tech, and CIO has an in-depth list of different orgs and programs paving the way.
