1. OpenAI Says Copyright Material is Necessary 😳

OpenAI is facing heat as it acknowledges the reliance on copyrighted material to train ChatGPT. The New York Times has already sued OpenAI and Microsoft for the "unlawful use" of its work, and other authors have also accused OpenAI of "systematic theft on a mass scale." OpenAI argues that without access to copyrighted content, training large language models like GPT-4 would be impossible.

2. Deloitte Rolls Out AI Chatbot "PairD" to Boost Productivity 🏢

Deloitte is introducing its own AI chatbot, "PairD," to 75,000 employees across Europe and the Middle East. This cutting-edge tool aims to enhance productivity by generating PowerPoint presentations, writing emails, and even coding. However, there's a catch: the chatbot is still a work in progress and may produce inaccurate information. Users are advised to validate its output before using it for work.

3. Nvidia to Start Mass Production of AI Chip for China 🇨🇳

Nvidia is defying export rules and getting ready to roll out its powerful H20 AI chip for China in the second quarter of 2024. The chip, designed to comply with U.S. restrictions, was initially delayed due to integration issues with server manufacturers. Chinese companies, however, are reportedly hesitant to purchase the downgraded H20 and are exploring domestic alternatives.

4. England's Legal System Takes Cautious Step with AI 👩‍⚖️

England's legal system, known for its wigs and robes, is embracing artificial intelligence to aid judges in producing rulings. The Courts and Tribunals Judiciary in England and Wales have given judges permission to use AI for writing opinions, but with caution. While scholars and legal experts debate the future impact of AI on the legal profession, this move shows a proactive step towards embracing technological change.

5. New Nonprofit Venture to Test AI Tools in Healthcare ⚕️

A group of academic hospitals and tech companies are teaming up to create a nationwide network of laboratories to test AI tools in healthcare. The goal is to certify and register AI models, ensuring transparency and performance before widespread adoption. The nonprofit, led by the Coalition for Health AI, aims to bring industry self-policing to the forefront.

1 – MidJourney Catching Criticism 😬

Welp.

This could get awkward.

Like we shared on today’s show, the newest version of Midjourney, V6, is not only producing amazingly realistic results, it might be TOO realistic.

Especially when it comes to its ability to seemingly duplicate copyrighted movies and TV shows.

What It Means:
Keep an eye on what happens in the New York Times vs. OpenAI case, as it will likely impact any future litigation between the TV/Movie industries and AI image/video startups like Midjourney.

For now, your company should have an open discussion on using AI art, as Midjourney’s updated TOS isn’t very friendly.

2 – AI-powered kitchens coming 🧑‍🍳

Think you can totally opt out of Generative AI?

Well, you can. But it’ll be harder than you think. GenAI usage is about to become more than just choosing what LLM is right for your business.

Case in point: Samsung is bringing a maybe-too-smart Smart AI fridge to kitchens everywhere.

What It Means:
Is an AI-powered, smart camera-enabled fridge cool? Frick yah!

(Oh, see what we did there with “cool”? Lolz)

We see 2024 being the year of hardware/large language model integration. So many companies and device-makers have miserably failed at their own attempts at in-house AI implementation.

So will LLMs finally make our devices actually smart? We’ll see.

3 – AI Announcements at CES 🧑‍💻

The buzz around CES is getting louder, and it's all about AI!

The Consumer Electronics Show kicks off tomorrow in Las Vegas. For 50+ years, CES has proved to be where the future of tech gets announced.

AI is expected to grab many of the headlines at CES this week. From companion robots armed with ChatGPT technology, to smart belts designed for the visually impaired, and the seamless integration of voice tech with generative AI systems – CES is set to be an AI extravaganza.

What It Means:
Like we just talked about above, prepare to see a lot of GPT integrations (and other LLM integrations) coming to hardware products.

TBH, we’d be super careful before buying a LLM-powered piece of hardware from Average Joe Company. With the easy ability to steer a LLM away from its guardrails, you might not wanna buy that GPT-powered robot.

Not yet, anyways.

4 – Deloitte Going All In on GenAI 🏢

Deloitte is making waves by going all-in on GenAI with the launch of ‘PairD’, an AI chatbot designed to assist 75,000 employees in Europe and the Middle East, Deloitte is revolutionizing how work gets done.

But don't go thinking it's all smooth sailing – employees are advised to double-check PairD’s output for accuracy.

This move signals a major shift in how companies are embracing AI, with Deloitte's investment aimed at avoiding layoffs and paving the way for a new era of smart technology.

What It Means:
We’ve called out the management consultant industry at large for its seemingly snail-essque response to GenAI.

With companies like EY, Accenture and Deloitte finally responding in a big way, it’s important now that the companies hiring management consultants ask the tough questions.

How are you using LLMs? Which models are you using? What time savings and cost savings are you seeing? Will those savings be passed to us, the end consumer? How are you verifying outputs from your GenAI models?

Don’t be afraid to ask the hard questions.
