Who can catch NVIDIA?

Seems like that’s the name of the AI game right now.

Companies are announcing new initiatives and plans only to get outmatched by the Santa Clara chipmaker.

And now, all of the other Tech Giants are joining forces to try and keep up.

It’s been a wild week in the world of AI.

And with now only one week until Apple’s big AI announcements at WWDC, things are only gonna heat up. So, you can spend hours upon hours each day trying to make sense of it all.

Or.

Orrrrrrrrr…..

You can roll with Everyday AI each Monday as we break down the AI news that matters.

Here’s what you need to know. đź‘‡

1 –NVIDIA releases ANOTHER AI chip 💾

(Cue DJ Khaled)

Anotha one!

Just three months after announcing the groundbreaking Blackwell chip, NVIDIA has (already?!) announced its successor, the Rubin.

NVIDIA's new Rubin chip is a big leap forward in tech, especially for businesses relying on AI and data-heavy computing. Built with advanced 3nm tech and HBM4 memory, it’s designed to be SUPER efficient and powerful. This means it uses less energy and produces less heat compared to the previous Blackwell chips, which were already crushing records in those two areas.

What it means:

NVIDIA announced they’re moving away from the two-year GPU chip release cycle to one year. And yoooooo. The ink on all the Blackwell press releases hasn’t even dried, and we’re already talking about it successor?

Obviously, we talk about Generative AI every day, and this is even fast for us.

It seems like NVIDIA’s got the cheat codes and it’s getting hard for others to compete. It’s actually getting so difficult that…..

2 – Big Tech teams up against NVIDIA 🤝

If you can’t beat them, join…. Forces?

Now, here's where it gets interesting. Big names likeMeta,  AMD, Intel, Google, and Microsoft aren’t just sitting around watching Jensen cash checks.

They’ve actually joined forces to form the Ultra Accelerator Link (UALink) Promoter Group. Their mission? To create an open standard for AI chip interconnects to compete with NVIDIA's NVLink. Basically, they want to make it easier and cheaper to connect a bunch of AI processors together, improving scalability and performance in data centers.

What it means:

This is a pretty unlikely collab, TBH. It’s pretty rare for Microsoft and Google to joint venture on anything. Throw in Meta, AMD, Intel and others and you’ve got a bajillion dollars of compute and AI power all working together.

Will their UALink be a success? Or will NVIDIA’s NVLink and the Blackwell/Rubin chip clean house?

We’ll have to wait and see.

3 –AMD announces new AI chip as well 📣

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

We get it.

More chips than a Super Bowl party where no one’s a good cook.

(Who brought these off-brand stale tortilla chips, though?)

While NVIDIA probably stole the show at the Computex conference, they weren’t the only chipmaker showing off. AMD also announced the Ryzen AI 300 series for laptops and Ryzen 9000 series for desktops are expected to launch in July. new AI chips for laptops and desktops at the Computex tech conference, with plans for data center chips and server processors in the future.

What it means: Right now, a bunch of companies are fighting for second place after NVIDIA. Here’s the reality — the business world needs more GPUs than companies can create. So even those in second or third or 8th place still have bread to be made.

Following NVIDIA’s announcement, the company soared 4.5% (which is a HUGE jump for one day) while AMD dropped off a short cliff and lost about 2.5%.

So if early analysts know anything, it seems like markets are heavily favoring NVIDIA’s releases.

4 – Eleven Labs releases text-to-sound effect 🔊

The power of words are getting louder and louder.

(Literally.)

Now, your simple text prompts can create soundscapes, instrumentals, character voices and sound effects inside of Eleven Labs.

Known for their very human-like text-to-speech capabilities, Eleven Labs just unveiled their text-to-sound-effects capabilities today.

What it means:

If you’re in any creative, marketing, communication or advertising field, you’ve gotta pay attention to this space. Whether you’re putting together a promo video, social media reel or narrating an audiobook, these new capabilities are gonna be HUGE.

We gave it a quick spin today. And although we weren’t blown away, we did walk away impressed with these new features.

5 – More details emerge on Apple-OpenAI 🍎

Thanks to some on-the-money reports from Bloomberg, we now know a little more about the OpenAI-Apple partnership expected to be talked about next week.

In exactly one week, Apple will kick off its much-anticipated WWDC. Given that Apple hasn’t officially announced anything on the Generative AI side for its hardware or software, this will be one of the most impactful Apple announcements of the last decade.

If you’ve missed our pretty much play-by-play coverage, Apple is reportedly partnering with OpenAI to bring new AI features to the iPhone, which could significantly enhance the user experience. This includes improved voice and visual assistants, as well as potential integration with Siri and third-party apps.

What it means

Siri will finally get smart, thanks the smart GPT-4o capabilities we saw demoed by OpenAI a few weeks ago.

Our two cents?

It might be too little, too late for Apple to truly compete out of the gate. Sure, Apple are magicians at marketing. But, Microsoft already has a multiple-year head start on its partnership with OpenAI.

So if you’re doing an apples-to-apples comparison (lolz pun intended) then we think Apple’s gonna be playing catch up for a few years.

Or, maybe we’ll all be overly smitten by AI-powered emojis and won’t care about core functionality?

6 – OpenAI drama unfolds: Sam Altman and co respond đźĄŠ

Former OpenAI board member Helen Toner spilled the hot AI tea on the Ted AI podcast about details of Sam Altman’s firing/rehiring, and the fallout has been intense.

Both Sam Altman and other board members have responded to her explosive accusations.

So, what did Toner spill? Here are the highlights:

  • Helen Toner accused Sam Altman of lying to the board, obstructing their work, and fostering a toxic atmosphere.

  • She claimed the board was blindsided by the release of ChatGPT, finding out about it on Twitter just like everyone else.

  • Toner detailed Altman's retaliatory actions against critics, including herself after she co-authored a critical research paper.

Since the podcast dropped, responses from Sam Altman and the OpenAI board have been coming in fast. They’re pushing back hard on Toner's claims.

Board members Bret Taylor and Larry Summers defended Altman, calling him "highly forthcoming" and great with his team. They pointed out that an external review by WilmerHale found no safety or security issues leading to Altman's firing. The board also emphasized OpenAI's commitment to AI safety, including setting up a new safety committee and making voluntary commitments to the White House.

Altman himself has reiterated his support for effective AI regulation, advocating for an international regulatory agency and a "regulatory sandbox" to experiment with AI technologies safely.

What it means:

Well, we’ve got a classic case of he said, she said, they said here.

Now us AI geeks finally have an equivalent of Bravo TV for our tech drama, as we watch jabs being lobbed back and forth.

Does any of this ACTUALLY matter?

Probably not much. We don’t see Toner’s comments (or the board’s response) changing anything. But, it is kinda entertaining to watch.

(Pass the popcorn.)
