Google Gemini Modify vs ChatGPT Reply: A Real-Time Feature Face-Off

Google Gemini has a pretty good and useful modify feature.

Some say that ChatGPT has a pretty similar feature.

BUT does it really?

Weā€™re putting Gemini and ChatGPT head to head to see which comes out on top!

Might this be the busiest week in AI in likeā€¦ ever?

In about 8 days time, weā€™ve see AI announcements from OpenAI, Google and Microsoft.

With OpenAI and Googleā€™s AI announcements in the books, itā€™s time to reflect on those and see what Microsoft has in store for its Microsoft Build conference.

And whatā€™s going on with the alignment team at OpenAI? Should we be concerned?

Weā€™ll tackle it all and dish on the AI news that matters.

Letā€™s get it. šŸ‘‡

1 ā€“ OpenAI and Reddit team up on data šŸ“Š

Whatā€™s happening with that great Reddit thread where you divulged all those personal deets?

Well, itā€™s officially now in the dataset for both Google and OpenAI.

According to reports, OpenAI and Reddit have entered into a partnership that gives OpenAI real-time access to Reddit content.

  • This partnership comes after Reddit's decision to charge for access to its data API, causing backlash and controversy from users and third-party apps.

  • Some publishers, such as the Associated Press and Financial Times, have also struck deals with OpenAI to use their content for training.

  • Reddit reached another similar partnership with Google in February, which allowed Google to train its AI models on Reddit data.

The deal between Google and Reddit was reportedly worth $60 million per year, although thereā€™s no reports on how much this new Reddit-OpenAI partnership might be worth.

What it means:

Reddit is a straight-up data goldmine.

So much of the content being produced and published online nowadays is done so with the help of Generative AI and Large Language Models.

(Thatā€™s an issue weā€™ll tackle some other day.)

But Reddit?

Rich, original research.

In-depth and lively discussions on intellectual topics, and first-person information that makes Reddit a golden get for LLM makers.

Expect Googleā€™s Gemini and OpenAIā€™s ChatGPT to benefit greatly from this partnership. And weā€™ll keep our collective eyes peeled on what new AI functionality Reddit may deploy with these new initiatives.

2 ā€“ Google responds to OpenAIā€™s announcements šŸ‘€ļø

But Google still brought the (AI) boom.

We covered OpenAIā€™s ā€˜Spring Eventā€™ in-depth last week and how their GPT-4oā€™s live agent can interact with the real world in real-time.

On Tuesday, Google responded with, ā€˜Project Astraā€™ their multimodal, live AI assistant.

Although Astra was the headliner, Google dropped a boatload of announcements, sprinkling Gemini-powered AI across almost every corner of its product set.

Some that caught our eye, aside from Project Astra:

  • Google announced enhancements to Gemini models, including Gemini 1.5 Pro with longer token context windows.

  • "Ask Photos" powered by Gemini was revealed for Google Photos, providing enhanced photo memory summaries.

  • Google announced the rollout of Gemini Nano with multimodality on Pixel phones.

  • Android 15 was presented with AI-powered search, Gemini as the new AI assistant, and on-device AI for new experiences.

  • Google showcased Gems, customized versions of Gemini AI for specific tasks.

  • Google demonstrated Google AI Teammate, a virtual teammate for work tasks.

What it means:

Itā€™s no secret weā€™re not huge fans of Googleā€™s AI offerings (and their kinda shady marketing tactics)

But are we impressed with their I/O announcements? Absolutely.

As the Gemini 1.5 model improves, so too will its entire product set.

Now, can we work on getting Google Gemini access to ā€¦. Google?

3 ā€“ Microsoft Build ā€” the AI trifecta? šŸ¤Æļø

This week is kinda like the AI March Madness, except in May.

(And probably fewer Cinderella stories and 12-5 upsets.)

With OpenAI and Googleā€™s announcements coming less than 24 hours apart from each other, Microsoft is ending the trio of announcements with their Microsoft Build conference.

Although Microsoftā€™s official 3-day conference doesnā€™t kick off until Tuesday, theyā€™ve already unveiled some AI announcements today.

The event sets the stage for what Microsoft is calling the "year of the AI PC" and also includes updates on Microsoft's AI initiatives such as Copilot+.

What it means:

Will Microsoft end the announcement tour with a bang?
Or fade into silent obscurity/domination with some quiet AI announcements?

While weā€™re expecting new AI PCs in its Surface lineup, there hasnā€™t been a ton of chatter about what new AI Microsoft has up its sleeve.

We could see some news about its MAI-1 model, and improvements to Copilot.

While Microsoft may not command quite the attention that Google and OpenAI did, you canā€™t write off Microsoft.

Weā€™d say theyā€™re silently leading from the front.

4 ā€“ OpenAI and Apple have a date šŸ¤

So many flip flops on this story, youā€™d swear you were on Spring Break in Florida or something. šŸ©“

Apple is the last tech giant to officially incorporate GenAI and LLM into its hardware and software, so the expectations for Appleā€™s June WWDC are sky high.

So is the rumor mill.

  • First, Apple was testing OpenAI.

  • Then, Apple was hot in talks with Google.

  • Then, Apple was leaning into its own LLM development.

  • Then, back to Google.

And now, Bloomberg is not only reporting that Apple has settled on using OpenAI in its future hardware and software, but also that the pair have an announcement date ā€” June 10.

What it means:

Appleā€™s never first. But, theyā€™re normally the coolest.

The most recent reporting rounds show that Apple will leverage OpenAIā€™s GPT tech in various aspects of its hardware and software ā€” from improving Siri to summarizing iMessage and websites in Safari.

We think Apple has a lot to lose if things donā€™t go right.

And, OpenAI likely has been hard at work for months to make sure their models can handle the increased demands of billions of Apple consumers.

Weā€™ll see in about 3 weeks.

5 ā€“ Safety concerns at OpenAI? šŸ˜¬

The former OpenAI Head of Alignment and Super Alignment teams, Jan Leike, resigned last week.

Jan started with a simple resignation tweet, but followed up with more details over the weekend, saying:

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman responded, simply saying, ā€œhe's right we have a lot more to do; we are committed to doing it. i'll have a longer post in the next couple of days.ā€

What it means:

Essentially, Jan led the team that ensured future AI and AGI models were safe for society.

Seems pretty important, right?

And the fact that Jan straight up said the teamā€™s work was a ā€œdangerous endeavorā€ and that ā€œsafety culture and processes have taken a backseat to shiny products,ā€ at OpenAI are not good signs.

Weā€™re not gonna go too far down the AGI and safety rabbit hole here, but the importance of Janā€™s resignation (and how OpenAI publicly responds) canā€™t be overstated.
