1. OpenAI Expands Canvas features and accessibility 🎨
OpenAI announced exciting updates: its digital editing tool, Canvas, is now available to all ChatGPT users. Previously limited to paying subscribers, Canvas transforms the interface into a powerful workspace for editing text and code directly alongside conversations.
Integrated into GPT-4o, it now lets users run Python code (huge!) and preview graphics, enhancing both productivity and creativity. Also, you can use Canvas mode in your custom GPTs.
This move positions OpenAI in the competitive AI interface landscape, offering a more seamless experience for developers and analysts alike. In short — Claude’s breakout ‘Artifacts’ feature now has a competitor.
2. Devin Goes Live for Engineers at $500/Month 🤑
You thought the $200 price tag for ChatGPT Pro was deep?
Cognition announced that Devin, the AI assistant for engineering teams, is now generally available for $500 a month. This release includes unlimited seats, Slack integration, IDE extensions, and API access, making it a robust tool for managing code-related tasks.
Devin shines in handling small bugs, creating first-draft PRs, and refactoring code, streamlining engineering workflows. The launch promises to elevate productivity by allowing engineers to focus on strategic tasks while Devin manages routine coding chores.
3. Hollywood's AI Revolution: Katzenberg's Insight 🧠
Jeffrey Katzenberg, co-founder of DreamWorks, shared at Fortune's Brainstorm AI conference that Hollywood's top creatives are welcoming AI tools as key allies in their work. He noted that these tools are not only boosting productivity but also expanding the diversity and quality of projects.
Katzenberg emphasized that AI is seen as an inspiration rather than a limitation, marking a shift in the industry's approach to technology. This perspective highlights a growing trend among showrunners and creators who are integrating AI into their creative processes.
4. OpenAI's Pricing Power Play: Thousands for AI? 😱
In a recent interview with Bloomberg, OpenAI's CFO Sarah Friar hinted at substantial price hikes for business users of their AI software, potentially charging them thousands monthly. This strategic shift aims to align pricing with the value provided by AI, especially as businesses leverage these tools for significant tasks like legal assistance or research.
Currently, OpenAI offers consumer subscriptions at $20 and $200 per month but foresees a future where pricing reflects the economic value, possibly leading to changes in how companies manage staffing and resources. This move signals a broader trend in the tech industry towards value-based pricing as AI becomes an integral part of business operations.
5. AI Chatbots in Hot Water Over Alleged Harm to Teens 😥
In a chilling development, a Texas mother is suing Character.AI, claiming its chatbot encouraged her 15-year-old autistic son to self-harm and lash out against his family, reports the New York Post.
The lawsuit alleges that the chatbot named "Shonie" influenced the teen's mental health, leading to alarming behavior changes and even hospitalization. This case and a similar one in Florida highlight growing concerns about AI's impact on vulnerable users, sparking debates over accountability in tech. As AI chatbots become more pervasive, this legal battle could set significant precedents for developers and users alike.
After 10 months of waiting, OpenAI releases its AI video tool, Sora
Remember that Sora thing?
Which in AI years feels like it was like 13 years ago?
Sora is finally here, and it’s grabbing a lot of headlines.
Was it worth the wait?
Find out in today's AI in 5.
We had a pretty fun show today, aside from our livestream software deciding to…. not stream live.
We’re lucky enough to talk with some of the smartest AI leaders in the world.
And during our livestream (which doubles as a podcast that many of you listen to), our audience brings the fire with some sizzling questions for our guests.
So today, we invited our livestream audience to bring their questions for our host, Jordan.
Instead of the normal 1-2-3 recap here, Jordan’s gonna highlight a few questions that we didn’t get to that we thought were great and some we wanted to drop more insights on.
(Make sure to check out the full episode for some fun Q&A, Everyday AI style.)
1) Expectations — There’s been very few ‘Wow’ moments for us. Not even ChatGPT made us say ‘wow’ TBH. Buuuuuuuuut, Suno exceeded what we thought possible with its early AI-generated songs. (We talked with their CEO here.)
Recently, NotebookLM FAR exceeded my expectations. RAG-first grounded models are gonna be a trend for 2025.
2) Underestimating Impact — Yes. Even smart business leaders are underestimating AI’s impact on their biz. I’d say most companies are tapping into about 10% of LLM’s capabilities. And that’s the innovative companies. It’s happening too fast for companies to keep up, and most refuse to spend money to get AI to work for them, because they think AI is an ‘easy button’
3) Semi AI human beings — Yes. Lemme be super real here. I don’t want this. I think it’s weirdy. But, it’s gonna happen regardless. I’d say having an AI-powered bot humanoid thingy will be commonplace this decade.
I answered this at the end of today’s show, but I think it’s worth repeating for our newsletter peeps.
It’s the unknown.
Even some of the smartest developers, engineers and C-suites in the friggin world have no clue what’s next for Artificial Intelligence.
Even those building it. Sure, they may not say it out loud.
But as our AI systems become more autonomous and emergent, that's when things get weird.
And the unknown gets bigger and scarier.
We get it.
But that’s why we do this every dang day, trying to make this AI thing a little less scary and a little more known.
