Elon Musk says AI will make jobs 'optional' – Crazy or correct? 🤔

Will AI make jobs... optional?

Elon Musk seems to think so.

His comments struck a chord with some. And rightfully so. As polarizing as Elon Musk can be, does he have a point?

Let's break it down..

↳ LLMs are getting more and more capable

↳ Companies still haven't fully implemented AI throughout their org

↳ When those two things happen – will human jobs make much sense?

🦾How You Can Leverage:

Does Elon Musk say off-the-wall things all the time?

Yes.

(TBH, we feel most of it is kinda nonsense.)

But when Elon Musk talked at the VivaTech conference in Paris a few days ago, the world took notice to what he said.

His comments were more than the normal, headline-grabbing quips he usually dishes on his Twitter/X platform.

That bold statement?

That AI will make jobs optional.

(Side note: Does that also make rent/mortgage/bills optional or nah?)

We took a deepish dive today on his comments, looked at his track record a bit, and then tried to answer the same question for ourselves.

Ready to explore?

Will our jobs just be …. Hobbies?

Let’s kick the can and find out. 👇

1 – Elon’s Track Record is meh 🤷

You can’t ignore the fact that Elon turned Tesla into a little-known brand into a legit global superpower.

But, people aren’t looking at another fact — Tesla’s run over the past 2.5 years has been one of the most disastrous losses by a company.

Actually, Tesla’s market cap change over the past 2.5 has been one of the biggest losses. Ever.

(At least when you look at a market cap loss.)

Sure, there’s some technicalities like stock splits, but Tesla’s financial performance has been pretty bad with net income dropping 55% year over year

Or, you could look at Twitter, which Elon bought for $44 billion but about two years later is now reportedly worth $12.5 billion.

What it means:

In short, Elon’s not batting 100. Not everything he says turns out to be true. So even though he’s widely regarded as a leading visionary in the tech space, he’s not always on-point when it comes to his futurist predictions.

2 – Does he ACTUALLY believe this? 🤔

Maybe.

Real talk — Elon also joked that he was an alien at VivaTech, so everything he says should be taken with a ginormous grain of salt.

But, see/watch for yourself:

But, he seemed kinda serious in what he said about AI at the VivaTech conference.

In short, it seems he does believe (or at least with 80% certainty) that future AI systems and humanoid robots will be so good in the future that us lowly humans won’t really be needed.

  • So jobs will be optional, but we could keep them as a hobby.

  • And that whole surviving thing? And shelter? UHI.

  • Musk thinks a form of Universal Basic Income called Universal High Income will take care of our basic needs.

(You know, for those of us who aren’t billionaires and trillionaires.)

What it means:

Aside from really using the word ‘benign’ a lot, a few things we took away from Elon’s speech, and some comments and news that followed shortly after:

  • He thinks AGI will be achieved in about 1-2 years

  • His parent AI company, xAI, just raised $6 billion dollars to work on various AI systems.

  • He wants to build a "Gigafactory of Compute" to make his AI models powerful. (We’ll see if that means future versions of Grok are actually usable.)

  • He thinks that AI and humanoid bots will be much better at human jobs than humans.

3 – He’s not the only one wondering 👥

So is Elon’s take here crazy or correct?

Like we talked about on today’s show, he’s not the only one musing.

Bill Gates and Sam Altman talked about similar topics a few months ago, which we covered in-depth.

Gates talked about what happens in the coming years when AI systems are so smart that they don’t necessarily need humans to help anymore.

What it means:

So if Gates and Altman are ALSO talking about the rise of Artificial General Intelligence and what purpose humans may have (or not have) in the future, does that mean it’s inevitable?

Should we just pack up our work belongings on our desk and call it a career early?

Here’s our take on if Elon’s hot take was crazy or correct:

In short, we think it actually might be a bit more correct than crazy. But we don’t see it playing out quite the same way.

Although legit no one knows what the future holds, this is the 101 of how we see AI impacting our jobs.

  • 1. AI will kill more jobs than it creates.

  • 2. Human skill and expertise will not be thought of in the same way in the future as they are today. Instead, your value will be measured by the amount of new business value you can create for a company while using AI.

  • 3. In less than 5 years, most of us will mainly be working with/around AI. (Like how knowledge workers are all mostly using the internet all day in various forms.)
