The Dispersion of AI Jobs Across the U.S. - Why it matters 💼

When we talk about AI jobs, we normally think that AI is just taking our jobs.

But that's not necessarily how it's happening in the real world right now.

AI jobs are being dispersed all across the U.S., and infused into more and more everyday roles.

Luckily for us, two experts have been keeping a close eye on AI job growth across the country, as they’ve created the world’s first AI-powered job mapping tool, UMD-LinkUp AI Maps.

We'll dive into their findings, answer your questions about the data around AI jobs, and talk about why the dispersion of AI jobs matters.

🦾How You Can Leverage:

The future job market can be a little uneasy with AI disrupting just about everything.

If only there was a guide to help you map it all out.

Oh wait. There’s a literal map that does that?

And the creators of this groundbreaking resource shared their insights exclusively today on our show

Yes and yes.

Today, we chatted with the braintrust behind the UMD-LinkUp AI Maps, the world’s first AI-powered job mapping tool for jobs around artificial intelligence.

Anil Gupta and Evan Schnidman not only shared insights from the UMD-LinkUP AI Map they created, but also took on some hot-topic questions live on our show.

  • Will AI ultimately take away jobs?

  • What sectors are using AI more than others?

  • Where are all of the AI jobs?

  • (Their answers might surprise you.)

Anil is the Michael D. Dingman Chair in Strategy at the Business School at the University of Maryland and Evan is the Co-Founder & CEO of the Outrigger Group.

Together, they built the UMD-LinkUP AI Map to better track trends in the U.S. around AI job data growth and industry trends.

🔥 Our hot take (on a Wednesday) — if you’re not using their free resource, you’re doing your career or company a disservice.

It’s a one-of-a-kind free guide that’s literally mapping out the often-tumultuous state of AI jobs and their impact on the economy.

Today’s show offers a future-forward look at the state of AI jobs. So, needless to say it’s a must-listen.

If you’re searching for the highlight reel, we’ve got that, too.

Let’s showcase 3 of our favorite takeaways from today’s convo. 👇

1 – Data in the public interest 👥

One thing that immediately caught our eyewhy is all of this data free and open?

Anil said trends of this magnitude should be free and available to all. He cited inspiration from the famous John Hopkins Covid-19 Dashboard, which kept the public aware of Covid cases.

In a similar fashion, Anil said the public should have open access to jobs data around AI. It’s no secret that AI and the job market have a complicated relationship.

People are worried about AI taking their jobs. But others are also excited about new industries AI can help create.

The UMD-LinkUP AI Map can help you traverse the winding road ahead by giving you future-facing insights into how AI is impacting the U.S. economy at large.

Try this:
Evan and Anil’s project was JUST featured in the Wall Street Journal.

Go give that story a read to see how companies are prioritizing hiring more AI talent and why employers are willing to pay a premium for AI-related roles. (Even in the midst of the recent tech layoffs.)

2 – Dispersion is not displacement 🙅

The one biggest takeaway so far from Evan and Anil’s findings around AI job trends?

Dispersion, not displacement.

Anil said it may be too early to get a data-backed understanding on AI’s impact on displacement, as that is closer tied to national employment trends.

But when it comes to month-to-month comparisons of AI jobs data, dispersion has been a common theme.

One dispersion trend — more overall AI roles and fewer IT roles.

Another trend — a huge surge of AI-related roles in Washington D.C. and Virginia.

Evan also highlighted the acceleration in the number of AI jobs and expected growth rate leveling off, especially looking at trends broken down by sector and geography.

Try this:
Check out their partner LinkUp’s latest blog post, which explores in greater depth the dispersion of AI-related jobs to the east coast.

It’s not JUST Silicon Valley that’s exploding for tech jobs. D.C. and Virginia are hot zones.

3 – Find your backyard pond 🏊

Man, Anil hit the spot with this analogy.

(We love us some similes and metaphors.)

One sneaky-good use case for the UMD-LinkUP AI Map? Anil said use it to find your backyard pond.

Here’s what that means.

Let’s say you wanted to go fishing, but didn’t know where the fish were. Well, what if there was a fishing guide that told you about all of the best local ponds to fish at?

That’s what the UMD-LinkUP AI Map can be for AI jobs.

Maybe you live in Kansas City and wanna know what AI jobs in finance are available? The AI Map can help you find that pond.

Or what if you want to see AI job trends in the retail industry in Illinois? The AI Map can help you find that pond.

Or if you …

OK, you get it.

Try this:
Have you really not gone and played with the UMD-LinkUP AI Map yet?

Go check it out, where you can filter by economic sector, big tech companies and more.

Go find your backyard AI pond.

Numbers to watch
