🦾How You Can Leverage:

Is it too little, too late for the education system when it comes to AI?

Darren Coxon said there’s still time.

Even though educational systems around the globe have fumbled the implementation process of Generative AI, Darren said schools can still jump on board and benefit from an AI future.

Darren is the Founder of CoxonAI and is a consultant and speaker who helps school systems globally tackle Generative AI.

In other words, he’s a former educator who now works at the intersection of AI and education, and has his finger on the pulse of how AI is (and isn’t) being used in classrooms.

To be honest, we’re pretty straightforward in our take that universities, especially in the U.S., are dropping the ball when it comes to teaching the next generation on AI.

But we’re not experts or anything. Darren is.

So on today’s show, he not only talked about how schools should prepare their students for the future, but also helped lay out a practical plan of attack to do so.

Ready to get schooled?

In 3, 2, 1 👇

1 – More fun, less scary 🥳

Yes, there’s reasons for educators to be scared of AI.

The unknown.

The mysterious black box.

The real dangers it can create in and outside of the classroom.

But Darren said the fear and misunderstanding is keeping schools and students from one of the greatest educational benefits in AI.

Darren said if schools (and students) can find creative and fun ways to use GenAI, it will break down the knowledge barrier and lead to wider adoption.

Try this:

Darren gave a great example of his daughter using LLMs to have a conversation with characters in a novel.

Here’s some other creative examples of how schools and students could use AI in the classroom:

  • Transforming history lessons into time-travel adventures where students interact with AI-generated historical figures in real-time simulations.

  • Hosting AI-powered treasure hunts where students follow clues generated by AI to unlock hidden knowledge or educational rewards.

  • Creating AI-guided language immersion experiences where students converse with AI characters in different languages to enhance their linguistic skills.

  • Implementing AI-enhanced escape challenges where students navigate through dynamic virtual environments with obstacles and puzzles generated by AI.

  • Introducing AI-driven music composition lessons where students collaborate with AI composers to create unique musical pieces.

  • Conducting AI-powered science fiction adventures where students work with AI avatars to conduct futuristic experiments and simulations.

  • Designing AI-driven art galleries where students curate exhibitions featuring artwork created in collaboration with AI artists.

2 – A new angle on learning 📐

Like all things, what we learn and how we learn is changing, Darren said.

Are schools threatened by ChatGPT and other LLMs?

“Like… we can’t start using this tool in schools because it will replace teachers!”

Darren said schools should not worry about job replacement, and instead focus their sights on re-learning…. learning.

Students are going to use ChatGPT even if it is banned, so schools need to rediscover the learning process and think of using AI as a compliment rather than a replacement:

  • Customized learning plans for students

  • Teaching outside of what can be learned or produced in a LLM

  • Creating interactive learning experiences for students

  • Increasing access and quality of education for struggling school districts or areas lacking quality education

Try this:

You know we wouldn’t leave you hanging with only a couple bullet-points of advice.

While Darren is mainly working with districts and decision-makers, we’ve already got a great in-classroom guide to AI literacy with Laura Dumin, a professor who’s using GenAI at the University of Oklahoma in some very unique ways

3 – Top down implementation ⤵️

We often talk about AI implementation in companies, and how it’s not a top-down approach.

In schools, it’s different, Darren said.

Change HAS to come from the top in education, because that’s the way schools work.

You have to start with leadership (districts, presidents, etc.) to make sure all levels are aligned.

Then, you need to make sure teachers themselves are comfortable and understand how to use GenAI systems and LLMs.

Lastly, Darren said schools need to have a strategic direction on why and how they’re using AI, and not just focus on edge use-cases.

Still wanna push it off and kick the GenAI can?

If schools don’t get AI implementation right soon, Darren said they’ll start voting with their feet.

Or in other words, students will eventually notice which universities are keeping up with the times and which ones are falling behind.

Try this:

If schools continue banning Generative AI, then schools run the risk of decreased enrollment and plummeting job placement rates.

Scary stuff? Maybe.

But we’ve already uncovered an extremely in-depth guide on how schools should (and shouldn’t) implement GenAI.
