Pop Culture ā€“ Actor Jack Black doesnā€™t think AI is all bad. Hereā€™s what he had to say.

1. OpenAI Prepares for Superhuman AI Era šŸ§

OpenAI is actively developing tools to control and regulate AI systems that surpass human intelligence. Their Superalignment team, led by co-founder Ilya Sutskever, is focused on steering these "superintelligent" AI systems responsibly. Amidst skepticism in the AI research community, OpenAI's approach involves using less sophisticated AI models to guide more advanced ones.

2. AI's Financial Stability Risks Highlighted by U.S. Regulators šŸ“‰

For the first time, a U.S. government report has identified artificial intelligence as a potential risk to the nation's financial stability. The Financial Stability Oversight Council, including key figures like Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, points out operational risks like data control, privacy, and cybersecurity in AI systems. AI's increasing use in the financial sector for pattern identification comes with challenges such as bias, accuracy, and potential misuse.

3. Putin's AI DoppelgƤnger at Press Conference šŸŽ™ļø

In a bizarre twist during a marathon press conference, Russian President Vladimir Putin was questioned by an AI-generated deepfake of himself. The AI doppelgƤnger, posing as a student, asked Putin about his use of body doubles and his views on AI. Putin, momentarily taken aback, emphasized the inevitability of AI and the need for Russia to be a leader in this domain.

4. AI Chatbots Crack Complex Math Problems šŸ§®

Scientists at Google DeepMind have achieved a groundbreaking discovery using large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT to solve complex math problems. This marks the first time AI has made a scientific discovery, suggesting these models can generate insights beyond human knowledge. DeepMind's "FunSearch" project used an LLM to evolve computer programs, leading to new solutions in pure mathematics and the bin packing problem.

5. OpenAI Fuels AI Innovation with Startup Fund šŸš€

OpenAI has launched the second round of its AI startup fund, Converge 2, investing $1 million in each of the 15 selected participants. This initiative aims to support innovative uses of AI across the globe, encouraging engineers, designers, researchers, and product builders to push the boundaries of applied AI. With applications open worldwide, the program seeks diverse founders, emphasizing that prior AI experience is not a prerequisite.

šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø Whatā€™s Going On and Why It Matters:

Sup yā€™all. šŸ‘‹

Itā€™s Jordan. Last week, I was lucky enough to be a featured speaker at the AI Summit in NYC.

Obvi, I taught people in my session how to create more human-sounding content inside of ChatGPT. But, thatā€™s not what todayā€™s show is about.

I got a front row seat to the future of Artificial Intelligence, so I had to share my main takeaways today with yā€™all.

From hearing keynote speakers to spending hours talking 1-on-1 with decision-makers at big AI companies, Iā€™ve got a lot to dish.

Skip down for the juicy stuff, but hereā€™s the detailed breakdown of what some nuggets in todayā€™s show

  • Recap of the key takeaways from the AI Summit

  • Implications for the overall AI industry awareness and understanding

  • Observation of a concerning lack of general knowledge among industry professionals

  • The competitive landscape and potential market saturation

  • Reassurance for those feeling behind in the GenAI space/race

Annnnnd a ton more.

Letā€™s get after it, shall we?

šŸ¦¾How You Can Leverage:

Itā€™s not every day that I get to rub elbows with the Whoā€™s Who of the AI world.

(OK. Actually, thatā€™s kinda what I do every day on the show, minus the physical elbow bumping.)

Sure, it was pretty fun to present at one of the largest AI summitā€™s in the world. But, outside of my presentation, my focus was on better understanding the GenAI vibe.

  • Whereā€™s the excitement?

  • Where are big companies headed?

  • Whereā€™s the roadblocks and opportunities?

Hereā€™s a look inside at trends and takeaways from the buzzing AI Summit in NYC.

1 ā€“ Data Gold Rush ā›ļø

Not surprisingly, there was more talk around data than there were water jugs. (But for real event organizers, we thirsty! Youā€™ve seen my giant water bottle on the show!)

From countless presentations and panels to (seemingly) dozens of exhibitors, talk on data dominated. Why?

Well, the number one roadblock for GenAI implementation seems to be the confusion around data. And with Dropboxā€™s recent data sharing shocker, itā€™s no wonder data is on every business leaderā€™s mind.

What it means: Expect 2024 to be a big tech catfight on who protects your data best. Data encryption, data compliance, data transparency, data fairness, data governance, data data data. Check this Forbes article from today on how Data Security is a top priority in 2024.

2 ā€“ Whereā€™s Gen Z? šŸ¤”

Maybe they were too busy TikToking their Snapchats (or whatever), but I was kinda shocked by the lack of GenZ at the conference.

The Web 2.0 era (defined by social networks, User-Generated Content and interactivity) was ushered in by the under-30s. But my observations showed the 50+ crowd outnumbered the under-30 crowd by a wide margin.

What it means: Sure, it coulda been that companies footing the conference bill wanna send their more senior leaders, but thereā€™s still something telling here.

My take ā€” the U.S. higher education system is failing its students. Since its small splash on the scene in late 2020, the majority of young people havenā€™t been taught GenAI in school. (Unless your name is Kaz Keller, and youā€™re teaching your teachers.) Is that an indicator of having too many GenAI jobs in the future and not enough young candidates? Probably.

3 ā€“ Carbon Copies Everywhere šŸ–Ø

Copy paste. Copy paste.

Seemed like a lotta that, TBH. In both the speaking lineup and the exhibitors, it seemed like a TON of overlap in topics and content. Just about everyone was talking data security and Large Language Model integrations. To be fair, the supply-and-demand go hand in hand. So itā€™s not like thatā€™s anyoneā€™s fault.

But, I was kinda surprised at the lack of out-of-the-box concepts.

What it means ā€” You donā€™t always need to follow the leader when it comes to building or implementing GenAI. Granted, you shouldnā€™t go all-in on some unproven ā€œAI Startupā€ that is prolly gonna get squashed.

4 ā€“ No oneā€™s figured it out šŸ¤·

Feeling like your GenAI journey is running uphill in the snow both ways to school?

Youā€™re not alone.

Hereā€™s the state of AI ā€” everyone is still figuring it out. Sure, some are further ahead than others. I even talked to a leader from a trillion dollar company (yes, with a T) who said their org hadnā€™t even rolled out training to all of its employees.

What it means ā€” Donā€™t give up on the GenAI race just because you havenā€™t started. Yeah, you might be a little behind. But itā€™s better to start now while no oneā€™s crossed the finish line. Need inspiration? This episode going over Real Business Use Cases for AI is a great starting point.

5 ā€“ Lack of general knowledge šŸ§

If youā€™re an expert in the letters A, B, and C, surely you know the Alphabet, right?

Nope.

Maybe Iā€™m a bit of a generalist GenAI dork. But, I was kinda shocked (and even concerned) when I talked with high-ranking people building AI who were at times completely unaware of other GenAI offerings.

True story ā€” someone didnā€™t even know what a Hallucination was. At an AI conference.

What it means ā€” GenAI is a skillset. So even if youā€™re deep in building or implementing a certain system, you need to know the basics of others. Learn about Google Gemini, understand what Midjourney is, get familiar with Runway and become a black belt in ChatGPT. Itā€™ll pay off sooner than you think.

Now This ā€¦

We asked you yesterday what you all thought about the newsletter length. Hereā€™s what you had to say!

It was a close one but ā€œthe newsletter is a good lengthā€ won with 42% of the votes.

But, a TON of you said the newsletter was a lil wordy and long, so weā€™ll probably be cutting down on its length a tad.
