š¤·āāļø Whatās Going On and Why It Matters:
When you think artificial intelligence, what do you think of?
ChatGPT?
Creating a text-to-video intro for your marketing campaign?
How about ā¦ using AI to literally power the future?
Tall task, right?
Luckily we tapped into insights from one of the worldās largest companies in NVIDIA to help us tackle this tough issue.
Marc Spieler, Senior Managing Director of Global Energy Industry at NVIDIA, joined Everyday AI for a fresh take on AI.
Yeah, GenAI is cool. And NVIDIAās chips power the whole revolution.
But today, we focused on how artificial intelligence can solve some of the most challenging energy issues we face today.
Because hereās the reality: energy consumption is at an all-time high. New technology means more devices.
And all that nifty GenAI we all love?
Needs tons of power.
Thatās why Marc and NVIDIA are using AI to find energy savings, reduce waste, and increase production.
And trust us, you donāt need to be working in the renewal energy field to find value from todayās show.
Hereās why.
Energy consumption and finding sources of renewable energy affects us all, whether we realize it or not.
Marc laid out the reasons why (and how) AI helps us better manage and produce energy, and broke it down in a way all of us can understand.
What else did we learn today?
A ton.
Collaborating with data center companies to create digital twins of data centers
Ensuring energy efficiency in data center components.
Importance of Compute per watt in maximizing performance and reducing energy consumption.
Managing the increasing number of electric vehicles on the grid
AI's role in optimizing energy production and consumption
Energy storage solutions and infrastructure
And the list goes on and on.
So, letās break it down and talk about what it all means. š
š¦¾How You Can Leverage:
If you missed out on todayās show, itās worth a second look. And watch.
We tackled how AI can be used to reduce consumption across all energy sectors, from old-school oil and gas to solar wind farms and renewables.
And hereās the facts ā weāre using more energy than ever before.
From an increase in electric cars, more devices in the home, and the surprising energy demands of GenAI, itās hard to unplug. Or ignore the challenges of keeping the lights on.
Letās make sense of it all, and understand how AI can help solve challenges in rising energy demands.
1 ā AI can increase production š
Thatās right, AI can actually help us squeeze more power at current facilities.
Marc gave us a great example of using Digital Twins to simulate how energy plants actually generate power. (Crazy, right?)
In short, NVIDIA is able to create a virtual twin of energy production plants and use AI and machine learning to learn from virtual clones, testing improvements that can be implemented in real life.
Try this:
Wanna get lost in power, energy consumption, and digital twins? (Us, too!) Go take a deep dive to see how NVIDIA used digital twins and the Omniverse to work with Siemens Energy. Its findings ā learnings through this process could help save utility providers $1.7 billion a year.
2 ā Personal power matters š
Think you canāt make a difference in reducing energy consumption?
Think again ā¦ and AI can help. Marc mentioned some easy takeaways on using AI in peopleās everyday lives. Using AI-powered GPS apps like Waze and tapping into smart home energy management systems are two easy wins in using AI to reduce your energy consumption.
Try this: In the same way we use GenAI to make our work lives (and regular lives) easier, think of how you can use AI in your daily life to reduce your energy consumption. Plus points: it saves you money, too. Also, check out a blog post Marc wrote about how the latest NVIDIA tech is powering the future of clean energy, which ultimately lowers all of our utility bills. (Score!)
3 ā Smarter smart homes are coming š§ ļø
We were kinda thrown off by this.
But you know the āsmart metersā that we hear about all the time in our homes? Turns out theyāre not always ā¦ smart. Marc said most at-home smart meters are only good at two things: giving you an accurate reading of your homeās power consumption and shutting off your power if you donāt pay your utility bill.
Try this: Keep an eye on whatās next in home meter tech. Marc mentioned NVIDIAās work with Utilidata, which partnered with NVIDIA to create a smart grid chip. What will this do? In simple terms, Utilidataās smart grid chip will be embedded in the āsmart metersā to make them ā¦ smart. The chip will enhance grid resiliency and integrate distributed energy resources.
Now This ā¦
