1. Meta's FAIR Team: A Decade of AI Innovation 🚀
Celebrating 10 years, Meta's Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) team has been a powerhouse of AI breakthroughs. 2. US Intervenes in Saudi Fund's AI Investment 🇺🇸
The Biden administration has compelled a Saudi Aramco venture capital firm to divest its shares in a Silicon Valley AI chip startup, Rain AI, backed by OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman.
This move, overseen by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), reflects heightened scrutiny over foreign investments in critical US technology sectors. Rain AI, known for designing AI chips inspired by brain function, represents a key area in the AI and semiconductor industry.
3. EU's AI Regulation Challenge: The ChatGPT Dilemma 🇪🇺
The European Union is at a crossroads in regulating generative AI systems like ChatGPT, with lawmakers struggling to reach a consensus. As crucial discussions approach, the regulation of 'foundation models' – AI systems trained on vast data sets – has become a major stumbling block in finalizing the proposed AI Act.
France, Germany, and Italy are advocating for self-regulation by AI model creators, diverging from other views favoring strict rules, especially for models with over 45 million users. This deadlock threatens to stall the AI Act, with potential shelving if not resolved before next year's European parliamentary elections.
4. Mastercard's AI Muse: Personalizing Online Shopping 🛍️
Mastercard has launched 'Shopping Muse', an AI-powered tool designed to enhance the online shopping experience. Developed by Dynamic Yield, this generative AI acts as a personal assistant, offering personalized product recommendations based on user profiles, intent, and preferences. Shopping Muse aims to recreate the in-store experience by understanding colloquial language and suggesting coordinating products and accessories.

🤷♂️ What’s Going On and Why It Matters:
And the AI chats keep on coming!
Like frisbees at a dog park on a sunny day, new AI chats are coming from every corner of big tech.
Today we tackled the latest entrant as the behemoth Amazon recently unveiled its Amazon Q AI chatbot.
In the (now) age-old battle of the AI titans, Amazon Q cheekily elbowed its way into the ring this week with its Q announcement to compete with Microsoft Copilot, OpenAI and Google. But will it be more than just a friendly sparring match? The plot thickens as the heated debate rages on about Amazon Q's compatibility beyond the AWS universe.
So, what’s Amazon Q?
Is it any good?
Who’s it for?
Jordan answered those questions and more on today’s show, going in-depth on what Q actually does.
In short, here’s where we landed:
Amazon Q, the new kid on the AI block, has flexed its neural networks before the crowd.
Right now, Amazon Q is for customers who are already on AWS, Amazon Web Services. And it’s setting itself apart from others, but trying to focus on operating in the space where work actually gets done. (Their words at their keynote, not ours!)
This generative AI powerhouse is a bit different than other AI chats on the market right now.
Picture an all-access pass to the AWS cloud, where Amazon Q rubs shoulders with your pre-existing data inside your favorite software like Zendesk, Salesforce, Dropbox, Microsoft 365, Jira and others.
If you want the full scoop, go give the whole episode a watch/listen, as we also talked about:
Overview of Amazon Q as an AI chatbot
Comparison with other AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot
Target audience and potential use cases
Focus on technical users, developers, IT professionals, and AWS customers
Configuration and connection process, data security, and access
Criticisms of Amazon Q's marketing and messaging
Anticipation of high adoption rate among enterprise companies using AWS
Impact on Amazon's stock performance and market reaction
What’s it all mean?
Are we abandoning ChatGPT? Is this better than Microsoft 365 Copilot?
Let’s dive in.
🦾How You Can Leverage:
Aright, another AI chatbot from a trillion dollar company.
(Analysis paralysis anyone?)
With Amazon Q, the company that delivers us boxes nonstop is now ready to deliver us some GenAI goodies in chat form to grow our companies.
But what’s it mean? Whether you’re a current AWS customer or not, here’s what it means for us all:
1 – Amazon Q is for AWS customers 🤖️
Gotta start at the top, we suppose.
One of the biggest question marks from Amazon’s Q announcement at their re:Invent conference was the heavy lean into current AWS customers.
Amazon spoke directly to the more tech-savvy, current Amazon Web Services customers. (Think developers, IT, Business Intelligence, etc.)
Will small biz, entrepreneurs and non-AWS customers be using Q? (Maybe with Amazon’s free AWS plan, perhaps?) Regardless, it seems as if Amazon Q, at least early on, will be geared more toward the tech-savvy enterprise clientele.
Try this: It seems like for now, Amazon Q isn’t for the masses. But if you wanna go in-depth to see for yourself if Q is for U, check out Amazon’s keynote highlighted by Q. Adam Selipsky talks on all things Q, highlighting the benefits for current AWS customers and others who want to tap into 17 years of data from AWS.
2 – Q vs. ChatGPT vs. Microsoft Copilot 🥊
Let’s state the obvious — AI chats are here to stay. And they’re the future of workplace communication.
Microsoft is likely leading the race here, due to its own Microsoft 365 Copilot and 49% ownership stake in OpenAI.
And aside from the Microsoft-ChatGPT duo, you’ve also got Google’s Bard, Anthropic Claude, Meta’s Llama and handfuls of other serious competitors.
So, which one is best for your biz?
Depends.
Our take is this: current AWS customers in enterprise will likely see immediate benefits from Q. Like… big time.
Try this: If you or your company are on the fence about which AI chat is best for moving your biz forward, you’re not alone. Go check out some of our other episodes about large language models, where we’ve covered everything from ChatGPT and Bing Chat to Claude and Bard.
3 – Mixed reactions on Q? 🫤
Wanna look beyond the marketing, AI wars and keynotes?
Samesies.
Aside from being dragged by the name Q — and the letter’s alignment with conspiracy groups — the reaction to Amazon Q seemed a bit mixed.
When other AI chats like ChatGPT, Bard and Claude were released, the fanfare was hard to keep up with. Hundreds of YouTube videos, dozens of in-depth podcasts, and hype oozing all over.
With Q, not so much. Could it be that we have chatbot fatigue? Maybe. Or is it because Q is seemingly being marketed toward a more niche and technical audience? Could be.
Regardless, it doesn’t seem there’s as much Q fanfare as previous chatbots. But still, we think those enterprise companies ingrained in AWS are gonna go bonkers growing their business with Q.
Try this: Outside of internet fanfare, there’s an interesting marketing tidbit we talked about on the show today.
During the days following the Q announcement at re:Invent, Amazon’s stock dipped about 2%. During Microsoft’s Ignite conference two weeks ago, its stock ticked up about 3% (before the abrupt Friday afternoon firing of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.) Could it be coincidental, or a direct response to enterprise sentiment? Either way, those few percentage points represent tens of billions of dollars in each company’s valuation.
