🦾How You Can Leverage:
Scams are easy to spot, right?
The misspellings.
The desperate tone.
A foreign prince immediately offering you a bajillion dollars if you just send him your banking details cuz he needs help moving the money and ONLY YOU CAN HELP. LOLZ.
Generative AI has changed that.
Online scams and cybersecurity have done a 180-degree turn in the past few years.
Sure, Large Language Models like ChatGPT and voice-cloning tools like Eleven Labs open up a world of creative possibilities.
But they can also unearth an ugly side — scammers are now smarter.
They cannot just write like you, but they can literally sound like you. And look like you. Or your boss. Or your HR Director.
See the problem here?
AI has turned scam detection from ‘can spot it from a mile away’ to ‘not even the smartest human can tell the difference.’
Luckily, we’ve got an expert to help show us the safest path forward.
Yuri Dvoinos is the Chief Innovation Officer at Aura, an AI-powered identity protection service company.
He shared his expertise and gave all of us some best-practice advice to better spot scams trying to take down our business.
Ready to get safer?
Buckle up.
Let’s get safe shorties. 🦺
1 – Hacking humans instead of systems 🧑💻️️
Sophisticated scams used to take time, effort and skill. Now, just about any bad guy can go after you or your business’s goods thanks to GenAI.
Yuri said the biggest changes in security over the past few years is that scam artists are trying to hack humans instead of systems.
Why?
Many of us have been trained on cybersecurity best practices when it comes to protecting company information. But, smart scammers have figured out how to use LLMs and openly available tech to better target individuals.
Then, scammers work their way up.
Try this:
Don’t get hacked, fellow human.
This article talks about how sneaky cybercriminals trick people into spilling the beans on private stuff. It goes over different ways they do it, like phishing, vishing, smishing, baiting, and pretexting.
2 – Verify single channel attacks ✅
Get a weird text from your “Mom”?
Did your boss just email you asking you to immediately transfer a few grand to his “other” bank account?
Yeah, we’ve all seen it.
It can sound real, too.
Like Yuri said, someone’s tone of voice can easily be replicated by LLMs with just a few samples.
Single-channel attacks are the most common, and, if you take the right steps, the easiest to verify.
Try this:
Yuri gave us a strategy that’s so simple, yet we’ve heard horror stories of so many people overlooking this step and still getting scammed.
If you get a weird text, call that person and verify.
If you get a weird email, text the person and verify.
If you get a strange phone call that kinda sounds like someone, shoot them a social DM to verify. Or, all of the above.
In short, Yuri says AI can make it SO easy to send convincing audio voice clones, deepfake videos and simple texts and emails that seem convincing. So always verify on at least one OTHER channel to check if the cry for help is actually real.
Go check out Aura’s article on the things to look out for to avoid these common scams.
3 – Understand the sophisticated future 🤔
Think you can keep up?
Think again.
Yuri said that scams are getting so sophisticated that even the smartest humans with a keen eye have a hard time deciphering scam from real.
(At least the good ones.)
Case in point: A finance worker in Hong Kong was tricked into paying $25 million to fraudsters using deepfake technology. He was actually on a live video call with deepfake versions of his own coworkers.
And that’s with old tech. Imagine how much more sophisticated future AI systems will be, and then think of all the bad ways that tech could be manipulated.
Text.
Voices.
Photos.
Videos.
Even real-time interactions.
Yikes.
Try this:
Yuri gave some simple advice:
Know that you cannot differentiate real from fake
Invest in security software protocols
Don’t blindly believe what you see/hear/read
Know trust shouldn’t be given easily, and it’s hard to earn
Always use multiple channels to verify anything suspicious
