🤷♂️ What’s Going On and Why It Matters:
So, this agreement isn’t a REAL law then?
Nope. Not at all.
If you listened to today’s show, you now know that the agreement between Big Tech and the US government on AI is nothing more than a handshake agreement.
Like, we won’t police you if you pinky promise to police yourself.
Big bosses from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Inflection, Microsoft, Meta and Amazon Web Services met with US President Joe Biden and his admin to try and cool the hot waters surrounding AI.
But, this agreement yielded nothing more than big tech saying it would self-regulate its AI efforts in the future.
So, why is it important, then?
In our opinion, this is a much-needed stop-gap.
The White House wants to say it did something to regular big AI, especially before the 2024 US elections. And Big Tech wants to play good guy with the government, especially as just about everyone is trying to sue them. Like, everyone.
While it IS kinda a marketing stunt between the two sides, it is ALSO what’s best for all sides involved.
This buys tech companies and the government time to craft meaningful legislation around AI, and how it will impact jobs, the economy and society as a whole.
The agreement buys time for both sides, as many US lawmakers are grossly underprepared to tackle AI legislation as they’ve shown time and time and time again they don’t understand the internet, let alone AI.
So what’s all this mean?
Let’s take a look 👇
🦾How You Can Leverage:
Something’s gotta give in the US around AI regulation.
The EU’s AI act is the one of first major AI laws and it will greatly impact how companies do business there.
But will this new agreement between the US government and Big AI Tech change things here in the US? And how can we prepare for it?
Here’s your plan to make it all make sense.
1 – Actually use AI in the workplace 💪
Wait, did you think you’d get through this without us actually telling you to use AI in your job?
Sure, you gotta make sure it’s cool with the powers-that-be. Once it is, you should absolutely be using AI in the workplace.
The government/big tech agreement signals that AI usage is here to stay, and a workforce superpower that we think is more impactful than the internet itself.
Try this:
Start with the basics. Here’s some of our previous episodes of Everyday AI that will have you understanding AI and using the basics in no time:
2 – Pay attention to both sides 🔎
Simple enough, right? Less than 2 (business) days into this agreement, things are still fresh.
Both big tech and big government are going to take this pinky-promise as a win for them, and probably a loss for the other side.
Try this:
We can’t understate how impactful real legislation might be to US companies. And you’d go crazy trying to keep up with developments on your own. Instead, just read this free daily newsletter, and we’ll always keep you in the loop.
3 – Mimic their handshake agreement 🤝
Wait… what? We know what you’re thinking: If this was more fluff than substance, why should my company do the same?
True, this government-big tech agreement lacks teeth, but it shows commitment. We encourage companies of all size to take their first step at AI governance, even if it’s a simple one-pager.
Try this:
There’s a great guide from the Corporate Governance Institute has a great guide on creating an AI policy, and you can also check out a previous Everyday AI episode on governance.
Now This …
Whew.
It’s only Monday and the AI world is already dropping major changes on us.
