🤷‍♂️ What’s Going On and Why It Matters:

What do you think of when you hear UI/UX?

Fewer clicks to get a conversion?

Changing a button color?

Just alphabet soup?

Today, we got a completely new perspective on User Interface and User Experience design, and what it specifically means for the future of AI.

So what do we think of now when we hear UI/UX?

Care for humanity.

Today, we were straight up blown away by the lighthearted takes, intricate insights and overall care for humanity from Yaddy Arroyo, Principal VUI Designer at Truist.

Maybe we weren’t expecting to walk away inspired.

Or energized.

Or with a completely new outlook on the importance of design in AI.

But Yaddy opened our eyes to the importance of accessible design, and the impact it has on humanity.

The ability to use generative AI systems might be a privilege that many of us overlook. It’s life-changing tech, but not everyone can access it as easily.

People with visual impairments, hearing difficulties, or cognitive decline still need access to AI that can improve and (and, in some cases, extend) their lives. Maybe even more so than other groups.

Luckily, Yaddy gave us the behind the scenes of why accessible design is SO important for the future of AI.

Let’s break this down y’all! 👇

🦾How You Can Leverage:

You thought this was gonna be a pixel-pushing episode?

Nah shorties!

Yaddy schooled us all on the societal importance of creating accessible AI systems. Helping people with impairments use generative AI is a tall task, and Yaddy showed us what goes on behind the scenes.

We covered a TON:

- Highlighting the importance of inclusive design for all users
- Talking about why multimodal AI systems are a must
- Discussing the potential impact of multimodal AI in education and everyday life
- Emphasizing human-centered design and caring for others

So what can we take away from this convo? And how can we apply this to our companies and careers?

Let’s get it.

1 – Start with the outliers 🤔

Want to build more inclusive AI systems?

Or, are you trying to find the right GenAI solution for your company? Yaddy dropped a gem here in her suggestion to first consider the outliers when you’re designing.

Try this:
If you’re only as strong as your weakest link, decision-makers need to make sure everyone has a level playing field from the start. Instead of seeking a sleek and sexy AI solution, focus on inclusion and accessibility. After re-watching today’s episode, you can get some bonus takes from Yaddy from the IxDA Chicago conference highlights!

2 – Embrace multimodality 🔀

Alright, let’s break down the lingo. For the latest wave of GenAI, all of the rage has been text to blank.

ChatGPT? Text to text.

Midjourney? Text to image.

Runway? Text to video.

But, the future is clearly a multimodal one that combines inputs from not just the keyboard, but also your voice, from photos, or even sign language, as Yaddy mentioned.

Try this:
Guess what y’all? Multimodal has already started to make some splashes over the past few months.

Yes, ChatGPT grabbed the headlines last week when it announced audio and visual capabilities, which will roll out to all users gradually. But if you want to experience multimodal capabilities now, Google Bard and Bing Chat allows for both voice and image input.

3 – AI can democratize education 🧑‍🏫

Pretty cool what an emphasis on accessible UI and UX can do, right? We dare to say this — if we design more equitable AI systems, we can democratize education.

Like. Whoooooooooa. You weren’t expecting this kinda heat when talking about user interfaces and user experiences, were you? But as Yaddy told us, that’s what accessible AI design can do — change how humans can learn and what we can achieve.

Try this:
Maybe you’re not a UI/UX designer for AI systems. We get it. That’s niche. But. Buuuuuuut … we can all help push for more inclusive GenAI systems and software.

If you’re a decision-maker in business, choosing between GenAI systems to use, pick the one that leaves no one behind. Choose the option that includes the outliers, even if it lacks a certain bell or whistle. With a human-centric approach, we can ensure better education for all users.

Now This …

Did your idea of AI design also change after this?
