1 – Google charging for AI-search? 😬

Google is contemplating charging for its AI-based search, a departure from its ad-revenue model, as reported by the Financial Times.

That prolly won’t turn out well.

While Google’s ad revenue has not dropped, its rate of growth has. And Google is facing stiff competition from companies like ChatGPT, Microsoft’s Copilot and Perplexity, so it’s looking for innovative ways to pivot and monetize.

What it means:  Don’t get us wrong, Google Search Generative Experience is one of the few AI offerings from Google that we think is a leader.

But, we think this potential move from Google could be disastrous as the user experience of free alternatives such as Copilot, Perplexity and ChatGPT continues to improve.

Check this video that shows how Google’s SGE works compared to Perplexity.

2 – Dynamic duo looking to fundraise at least $1 billion️ 🤑

Could there be a better 1-2 combination for a future AI-enabled hardware product?

According to The Information, famed Apple Designer Jony Ive and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman are fundraising for their AI-powered personal device startup.

Although nothing has been confirmed, reports have shown for months that Ivy and Altman were going in on a secret project together.

The new news here – they’re reportedly in talks currently with big VC firms like Emerson Collective and Thrive Capital to raise at least $1 billion.

What it means – We’re not sure, but it’ll likely big an immediate hit or flop. Ive is known for helping create world-changing products like the Mac, iPhone and other Apple devices that changed the world and Altman is leading the most popular Generative AI company.

Put them together – who knows what could happen. All we know right now is the project is not supposed to be a mobile device, but is supposed to change how us regular humans interact with AI-powered devices.

3 –Anthropic launches ‘Tool Use’ 🛠️

Is Anthropic’s Claude getting more useful?

Kind of.

Anthropic AI has introduced a beta version of its "tool use" feature for all Anthropic Message API users, enhancing the functionality of Claude suite's generative AI models.

Developers can now integrate external tools into Claude, enabling real-time information retrieval and third-party feature integration within Claude's workflow.

What it means: Is Claude super useful now with third-party tools and access to the internet? Nope. This update only allows these capabilities for third-party tools and developers.

Go check out this recent comparison we did between ChatGPT’s GPT4, Gemini Ultra and Claude 3 Opus.

4 – Musicians uniting against AI 👩‍🎤

A slew of big-name musicians is coming out belting the high notes against AI.

More than 200 musicians signed an open letter urging tech companies to refrain from using AI music generation tools that could jeopardize human creativity.

The artists, including big names like Billie Eilish, Nicki Minaj, Jon Bon Jovi, highlight the risks AI poses to privacy, identity, and livelihoods in the music industry.

What it means – We’ve seen the incredible results that tools like Suno and Stability AI are already capable of. (And apparently, there’s another AI-powered tool in the wild that rivals Suno, who we interviewed this spring on the show.)

Will AI ultimately replace musicians? Maybe. But in the short term, you better believe AI-generated clones and remixes of popular musicians will keep their legal teams busy.

5 – Big tech companies unite against AI 🤝

Google, IBM, Indeed, Eightfold, Accenture, Intel, Microsoft, and SAP, along with six advisers, have formed the AI-Enabled ICT Workforce Consortium led by Cisco.

The consortium aims to positively impact over 95 million individuals globally in the next ten years by providing upskilling and reskilling opportunities due to accelerated AI adoption.

What it means Better late than never, we supposed. (Shrug.)

We know we’re in the minority here, but we like to cut it straight with y’all about AI and job loss. Yes, AI will create millions of jobs that don’t exist today. But we ultimately believe Generative AI will bring with it a net-negative impact on total jobs.

However, we’re clapping for Big Tech here, as upskilling and reskilling is sorely needed. Like yesteryear.

6 – Chase CEO says AI will be as impactful as electricity 🔌

Pretty big 180 here from Jamie Dimon, the CEO of JPMorgan Chase.

After being one of the first big companies to completely ban ChatGPT for its employees, now JPMorgan Chase’s CEO is kinda changing his tune.

In a letter to shareholders today, Dimon emphasizes the profound impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on society. Dimon foresees AI as potentially transformative, comparing its impact to major historical technological inventions like the printing press, the steam engine, and the Internet.

What it means – We’d say companies can learn a thing or two here from JPMorgan Chase.

They undoubtedly dropped the ball when it came to early GenAI implementation, but seem to be heading in the right direction now with these recent statements from Dimon and their LLM-extension DocLLM for multimodal reasoning.
