🦾How You Can Leverage:

We’re all affected by translation, whether we see it or not.

Behind the scenes, translation and localization are making it easier for the world to do business and communicate with each other.

Large language models have rocked the space, bringing both amazing new capabilities to translation services yet also presenting new road blocks.

Is AI going to erase this space? Or will humans be more important than ever?

Olga is the VP of AI at Smartling, a translation management platform that uses AI to help companies automate and improve the quality of their multilingual content, making it easier and faster to reach global markets.

Will translation jobs go away now that LLMs are here to stay?

Jobs may not look the same as they once did, but humans are more important than ever in the space.

Let’s break down how AI-powered translation impacts us all, and what we need to know. 👇

1 – Translation impacts us all 🔂

The average person sees hundreds of ads or pieces of marketing a day. You probably read dozens of pages on websites.

Guess what?

At some point, translation was directly involved. And with translation services and professionals now tapping into LLMs to bridge the gap, the content we consume crosses borders effortlessly.

The LLM + translation service duo provide us with seamless, coherent, and contextually accurate translations that enrich our digital experiences.

2 – AI to double check AI

Wait… human translation specialists can use AI to double check AI?

(Shakes head to wake up out of the Matrix)

Yep.

Olga said the beauty of using LLMs in translation is they can sort of self-heal and self-judge. In other words, you can go through your first check of translation from GPT3.5 by using GPT4. (With a watchful human eye, of course)

Try this: Is the intersection of translation and AI really your jam? Wanna geek out even HARDER on how impactful (or not?) LLMs are in regards to translation? Olga broke this down even further on her podcast episode, Have LLMs mastered the art of translation?

3 – Reskilling in communications 🗣️

So, here’s the big question — will human jobs in translation go away? Not exactly, Olga said. Instead, she thinks human roles may become even more crucial, requiring specialist subject matter knowledge, fact-checking, and validation. With advances in AI, human translators will pivot towards these supportive and supervisory positions.

Try this: In an ongoing shift, Olga said professionals in the translation and localization sector have been continually reskilling. There’s no denying that LLMs have taken on a brunt of the manual work that humans in those roles once did. Olga mentioned there will continue to be a shift towards professionals in the field working as specialized subject matter expertise, fact-checking, and validation, as well as an expansion of roles where project managers could evolve into data analysts for AI-based decisions.
