7. OpenAI Says Copyright Material is Necessary 😳

OpenAI is facing heat as it acknowledges the reliance on copyrighted material to train ChatGPT. The New York Times has already sued OpenAI and Microsoft for the "unlawful use" of its work, and other authors have also accused OpenAI of "systematic theft on a mass scale."

OpenAI argues that without access to copyrighted content, training large language models like GPT-4 would be impossible.

ChatGPT @mentions: The good the bad and the future

ChatGPT’s mentions feature allows you to bring in and talk to multiple GPTs in your chat at once.

Here's some things you may not know (and things we haven’t seen anyone else mentioning yet.)

Welp.

Has the future of work changed in the past few hours?

The AI news world (and, probably the business world) has kinda exploded today with some recent announcements from OpenAI.

Let’s not waste any time and get right down to it.

1 – OpenAI announces new model and desktop assistant 😬

Dang.

The day before Google is set to announce some of its AI offerings at the I/O Developers conference, OpenAI already put Google on notice.

And the AI world at large.

On Monday, OpenAI hosted a live Spring Event, where they unveiled some updates that have had the rumor mill churning for months.

In short, here’s what you need to know:

  • A new GPT-4 variation, called GPT-4o, which stands for Omnimodel

  • GPT-4o will be available to free and paid users

  • Paid users will have 5X the capacity limit as free users.

  • Even free users will soon be able to access the GPT Store, which was previously limited to ChatGPT Plus paid users

  • GPT-4o combines transcription, intelligence and text-to-speech all in one mode

  • A new desktop assistant, that can “hear” and “see” what you’re working on

  • GPT-4o rolling out to the API at a reduced cost.

  • A live view mode, presumably being able to use vision in real-time

  • Reduced latency, with a real-time feel in voice-to-voice communication

  • A much more human feel

  • Will start to roll out to users in “the coming weeks.”

What it means:

Sheesh.

This means a lot. Tune in tomorrow, and we’re gonna give you the full scoop. Just know that this announcement will likely change how we all work. (Whether that’s in 3 weeks, 3 months or 3 years, though, remains to be seen.)

2 – Apple and OpenAI = new AI superteam? 🧑‍🍳

As first reported by Bloomberg, Apple and OpenAI appear to be teaming up for Apple’s next iPhones and their iOS 18 operating system.

And after today’s announcement from OpenAI, who can blame Apple. (Maybe Siri will be replaced or updated with GPT-4o capabilities?)

Apple has also had ongoing talks with Google to potentially use its Gemini model for future iPhones, but the most recent reports are now saying that Apple has ditched Gemini and is closing in on a deal to bring GPT to its iOS lineup and future edge AI opportunities.

What it means:

Bad news for Google, if true.

We’ll see what Google unveils at its I/O Developers Conference tomorrow, but between the reported Apple and OpenAI partnership and OpenAI’s recent announcements, Google’s really gonna have to hit a home run to stay competitive in the GenAI space.

Also, you can’t forget that Microsoft reportedly has a 49% stake in OpenAI, which means that (in some ways) Microsoft will ultimately benefit from any OpenAI-Apple partnership.

3 – ElevenLabs teases AI Music generator 🧑‍💻

We swear — no cap here.

ElevenLabs teased us all with this impressive text to music demo. The leader in the text-to-voice space is now a prominent player in the text-to-music space, even though they only released a single teaser song.

The generated songs are at least 2-3 minutes long and can potentially make it on the radio, and there’s no timeline yet on when this may be released to the public.

What it means:

Despite concerns over copyright and musicians' rights, AI music is here to stay as a creative tool for musicians and everyday people to create and share music.

Right now, ElevenLabs is joining the two big players in this space in Suno and Udio. We’d say that one of the big music streaming services (Spotify, Apple, Tidal, etc.) is primed to acquire one of these AI music generators to integrate into their platform.

Imagine an entire playlist of AI-generated songs created for you on-demand, based on your mood, listening habits, or a simple text prompt.

Mind blown?

4 – Future of AI-powered SEO: No links? 🔗

On an appearance on CNBC's show, Squawk Box, Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt gave his takes on the future of search in an AI-first world.

Schmidt predicts a future where websites are no longer necessary and AI dominates search results. This idea is supported by Google's past actions and advancements in AI technology.

He suggested that Google in the future may prioritize showing direct answers to user queries over traditional web results. We can all welcome that change, rigth?

(Unless you really enjoy going down those rabbit holes?)

Schmidt also said that AI is actually underhyped (not overhyped) and has the potential to revolutionize the way we interact with information.

Big agree, Eric.

What It Means:
The future of how we use the Internet won’t look like how we’ve used the internet for the last 25ish years.

Is traditional SEO dead? We think it kinda is.

Gone are the days of endless searching, 20 tabs for one query, and endless searching to try and summarize information.

And sooner rather than later, we may see those blue links and search results as a thing of the past.

What do you think?
