🤷‍♂️ What’s Going On and Why It Matters:

So apparently the medical review process is …. slow.

And that means that everyday people like us are left waiting for medical breakthroughs, medications, and medical devices that could make our lives better.

Lefteris Teperikidis is a freelance medical writer specializing in systematic reviews, and he joined Everyday AI today to shine some light on an area we don’t talk about often enough.

With more than 20 years in the medical knowledge and systematic reviews space, he showed us just how meaningful AI can be in the medical knowledge space.

Here’s the tl;dr version: it takes years for medical advancements to proceed. And it doesn’t have to be that slow, especially with Generative AI now on the scene.

So, whether you’re in the medical field or not, this impacts us all. When and IF Generative AI can be implemented in the medical review process, we’re talking about faster access to better healthcare.

Sounds like something we all want, right?

Let’s diagnose this one a bit more. 🔍

🦾How You Can Leverage:

Does it really take YEARS for new medical advancements to make it to market?

Yup.

If you missed Lefteris Teperikidis breaking down the medical review process, it’s worth a listen.

After the clinical trial process, it can take a year or longer to get new research, medicines or medical devices to market because of the systematic review process.

As a Generative AI advocate, Lefteris sees the potential in using artificial intelligence to shorten the that process by infusing some AI into the process.

But it’s not as simple as snapping our fingers. The stakes are high and the medical review processes are leeeeeeeeengthy.

Let’s break down some insights, and see how AI may (or may not) shift this industry and open up faster medical advancements for us all:

1 – Cover your bases 🛏️

Not gonna lie y’all….today’s show was a deep topic.

And like Lefteris mentioned, not everyone inthe systematic review community WANTS generative AI in the fold. Some people have doubts about the accuracy of Generative AI in a highly technical and sensitive space, while others already see how effective AI can be in the field and therefore fear for their jobs. First, you should listen to our full convo, then, check out some resources below.

Try this: This topic definitely requires some additional reading. Take a dive into this in-depth guideline looking at best practices using Generative AI for scientific research from the University of Michigan. And then, check this paper from the National Library of Medicine that looks at the emerging role of Generative Artificial Intelligence in Medical Education.

2 – Validate and Collaborate 🤝

AI should be applied with caution.

Just like in the medical field, Lefteris mentioned how critical it is to validate AI tools by subjecting them to the equivalent of a clinical study. Yeah, GenAI systems can hallucinate if you don’t use them properly. So, it’s important to establish trust between the AI community and medical writers – collaboration is key!

Try this: Ok, this is definitely not anything related to clinical knowledge or medical reviews. However, here’s a quick resource for anyone looking to validate the most basic of GenAI tools: ChatGPT. One of the most important things to do is to self-validate your own processes, such as we showed you here when using ChatGPT plugins to aid in the research process.

3 – Look responsibly in the future 🔎

(Not so) Hot take: AI is going to disrupt the entire medical field.

And clinical reviews and medical guidelines will change. Even when we look outside the scope of clinical trials and medical knowledge, the future of healthcare is being powered by AI.

Try this: Here’s a basic checklist to take a look at the future of AI and healthcare:

- Read about Med-PaLM 2, Google’s healthcare-focused large language model

- Check out Microsoft’s Health Bot, its AI-powered healthcare assistant

- Read this post from Lefteris about the future of Clinical Practice Guidelines
