🦾How You Can Leverage:

AI can be ugly.

But it can also be beautiful.

Literally.

Wayne Liu joined Everyday AI to talk about all things beauty.

(And we covered some of the ugly side of beauty and AI, too.)

And Wayne should know.

He’s the President and Chief Growth Officer of Perfect Corp., a publicly traded company and leader in the intersection of beauty and technology.

He gave us the inside scoop on how Perfect Corp. is using AI to change the beauty industry.

From virtual try-ons at your favorite department store to a skin analysis at your at medspa, there’s a good chance Perfect Corp. is behind that tech.

And Wayne’s got the chops to dish on AI.

Both from his background leading NVIDIA’s GPU program more than 20 years ago to heading a public company that’s been using AI since its inception, he knows a thing or three about AI.

And he lifted the curtain on how AI will continue to impact the beauty industry.

Is AI (and social media) setting unrealistic beauty standards?

Can the beauty industry use AI for more than fashion and trying out different hairstyles?

Let’s answer those questions and more as we take a look at key takeaways from today’s show. 👇

1 – A new level of personalization 👤

Many of us may think of AI as a high-powered content machine. Or, a smart assistant that helps you analyze hours of data in seconds.

In the beauty space, though, it’s a more personalized you.

Wayne shared ways Perfect Corp and their clients use AI to help people customize their beauty experience like never before.

From virtual try-ons to finding matching beauty products, AI allows users to understand and address their specific skin conditions.

It provides personalized dermatological insights and educates users about their skin, empowering them to make informed decisions about treatment options.

Try this:
If you’re shopping in brand name beauty stores like Estee Lauder Companies or Clinique, you may run into some Perfect Corp. tech.

But even from your couch, you can check their free YouCam apps. Wanna change your hairstyle or makeup to see how it’ll look or need to test drive a new nail art design?

Or maybe you just wanna upscale some old photos with AI or try a new AI image generator? Their tech stack is deeeeeep.

2 – A new standard of beauty 🤔

There’s an ugly side to beauty. 😬

Wayne and Jordan talked through the stickiness of how AI (and social media) is changing the beauty industry.

Wanye discussed the negative impact of social media and even AI at times in setting unrealistic expectations of beauty. (Like, did you see what this AI image generator did to Jordan?)

Wayne also emphasized the importance of AI enhancing, rather than replacing, natural beauty and personal expression.

Try this:
Wanna know a bit more how AI is impacting beauty? You gotta see this CBS News report to see what happens when you combine AI, beauty AND robotics. (Kinda wild, TBH)

3 – AI can be sustainable 🌱

Fast fashion is a problem.

Whether it’s T-shirts that fade faster or makeup that just doesn’t last, there’s definitely some environmental downsides to the beauty industry.

If you don’t like a makeup product or a new outfit, Wayne said companies often end up throwing it away.

Like, why’s looking purty gotta hurt the earth like that?

Wayne said this is something Perfect Corp is working on. He talked about how Virtual Try On (VTO) technology can actually help reduce waste and combat climate change.

Try this:
Welp…. This one’s shocking.

The beauty industry alone generates 120 billion units of plastic packaging annually. 😳

Take a look at this study showing how Perfect Corp is using its AI-powered tech to counteract that. It shows Virtual try-on technology can help reduce carbon emissions significantly.

Assuming 10 billion VTOs yearly, equivalent to reducing the waste created by 2,500,000 lipsticks each year, resulting in 250,000 Kg CO2e reduction.
