🦾How You Can Leverage:

As Apple and AI fans, this one’s hard for us to admit.

Apple’s failed miserably when it comes to Generative AI.

And their upcoming announcement Monday at WWDC might be too little, too late.

For #HotTakeTuesday we brought out the flamethrower and (kinda) torched Apple’s failed GenAI rollout.

Why?

They’ve kinda ignored Generative AI.

And although they’re gonna see a boom in the coming weeks and months after they announce Generative AI features next week, we think it’s gonna be only a slight blip in the long run.

When it comes to GenAI, Apple is not only kinda playing a lose-lose game, but their announcement next week might be too little, too late.

Let’s get spicy 🔥

1 – OpenAI partnership: sign of failure? 🧑‍🎨

Personally, we think this is the right choice.

But if Apple ultimately reveals a partnership with OpenAI on Monday as expected, it’s a massive L for Apple.

Nope.

Instead, the most cash-rich company (like… ever) failed to bring its own model to market and now must rely on a startup AND make its competitors richer.

What it means:

Given that its own model (apparently) wasn’t ready for the big time, Apple had no other choice but to partner with OpenAI. (We said as much months ago.)

There was reporting that Apple was courting Google and Anthropic for the task, which would have ended in disaster.

(Real talk — OpenAI is the only model that’s ready for the big time. #SorryNotSorry)

What makes this worse?

The reported billion-plus deal between Apple and OpenAI just makes Apple’s competitor richer.

Microsoft reportedly has a 49% stake in OpenAI. So with this move, Apple is kinda just throwing free money at its biggest competitor in Microsoft.

Yikes.

2 – Apple has lost its innovation edge 🎯

When was the last time we truly saw an innovative product from Apple?

It’s been a while. Like. A loooooong while.

Usually, Apple finds the right combination of being second in a space, but much better.

Examples:

  • The iPhone was not the first touchscreen phone. Or the first portable music device. Or the first tablet. Or the first XR headset (that we knew would flop.)

    It was just better.

  • But in the case of the iPhone, iPod, iPad, Apple Watch and others, Apple didn’t drag their feet. Sure, they weren’t first. But they weren’t last. They still struck while the market was hot.

What it means:

Our take — we shoulda seen this announcement from Apple in 2023. Yeah, Apple’s always the cool kid that shows up late to the party.

But, metaphorically speaking, the ‘Welcome to AI’ party is over.

Case in point — Microsoft last month released some impressive updates to its AI Copilot tech, which they announced in March 2023.

Apple is a whole cycle and a half behind its AI-first competitors.

3 – Their upcoming surge will be short-lived 🧍

Don’t get us wrong — these new, AI-powered Apple iPhones are gonna sell like hotcakes.

(We’re big pancake fans, BTW. Anyone else?)

We’re not saying the next generation of Apple is gonna flop. (We already called that with the Apple Vision Pro.)

Actually, the next iPhone may be Apple’s best selling iPhone in years due to edge AI capabilities.

But we see this being short-lived.

Unless Apple has some sort of trick up its sleeve that no one has reported on, we honestly think Apple will see only a short-ish bump in its stock.

What it means:

Let’s be honest — we’re not market analysts. (Although we DID stay at a Holiday Inn Express once and totally told y’all a year ago that NVIDIA was gonna wipe the floor with everyone.)

But, you can’t argue with the facts.

Google (Alphabet), Microsoft, Meta, Amazon and NVIDIA have all outpaced Apple’s growth over the past year.

Like, they’ve been straight up slapping Apple silly in 1Y growth:

  • Microsoft: 22% 1Y growth

  • Alphabet/Google: 38% 1Y growth

  • Amazon: 42% 1Y growth

  • Meta: 75% 1Y growth

  • NVIDIA: 194% 1Y growth

  • Apple: 7% 1Y growth

Actually, before the OpenAI/Apple rumor was all but confirmed, Apple’s stock was actually DOWN year-over-year.

Want an extra juicy hot take?

We see that before the end of 2024, Apple will lose its place among the Top 2 U.S. companies by market cap and will get gobbled up by NVIDIA. (Could happen within weeks TBH.)
