🦾How You Can Leverage:

Wait.

Can AI help make product managers more …. Human? And help us understand humans better?

Yup.

And us humans should be taking advantage of that.

That’s one of the main takeaways from Kimberly Williams, a Senior Product Manager at Microsoft.

(Maybe you’ve heard of them?)

With more than 200,000 employees and hundreds of different products and service categories, Microsoft knows a thing or two about managing products.

And Kimberly took us behind the scenes of not only how it’s done, but also dished her personal tips on how Generative AI can help every step of the way.

Don’t worry y’all — even if you’re not a product manager (or project manager) today’s show is FULL of actionable strategies for anyone who sits in front of a computer and wants to leverage Generative AI.

Ready to learn from the best in the biz?

Here’s our big takeaways. 👇

1 – AI = more meaningful meetings 🤝

Can you just send an AI in your place?

Maybe.

At the very least, AI-powered meeting assistants can help you focus less on the transactional aspects of meetings and more on creative thinking and strategy, Kimberly said.

As a product manager, Kimberly said meetings are inevitable.

PMs need to:

  1. meet

  2. talk

  3. strategize

  4. keep product development flowing

And as fast-moving as products and projects are, the last thing we should be doing is manually taking notes.

Kimberly talked about using a Copilot meeting assistant in Microsoft Teams that helps with automatic transcription, pulling out and assigning action items, identifying speakers, meeting summaries and drafting follow-ups.

Try this:

We constantly talk about the importance of an AI meeting assistant. Kimberly mentioned Copilot inside Microsoft Teams, which is a great call.

If you’re a heavy Zoom user, this episode with Smita Hashim, who is the Chief Product Officer from Zoom, is worth your watch.

And in this newsletter, we recapped some of our favorite meeting assistants. (Check #2)

2 – AI takes away emotional and cognitive load 😩

You ever just stare at the screen, cursor blinking, wondering if you used the right word?

Or if Bill in accounting is gonna think that exclamation mark means something it doesn’t. (BILL, CHILL, WE’RE JUST EXCITED!!!)

Or if you should maybe tone it down?

Kimberly offered another simple use-case for Generative AI that we often overlook — easing the burden of constant communication and how it’s received.

We love how Kimberly put it — ultimately, product managers use communication to influence and move toward a common goal.

But the communication process can be cumbersome. And a load on your brain. And emotions.

Try this: Don’t get us wrong — ya’ll know we’re not a fan of pre-packaged, copy and paste prompts.

(Like Kimberly said, proper prompting with the correct language is crucial!)

But, we can’t help but to share Kimberly’s shortest piece of advice or prompt we’ve heard in a while:

“Make this better.”

Lolz. Like…. get to it robot!

Instead of spending 45 minutes laboring over how to finesse connecting point A to point B, do this instead. 👇

  • Quickly jot down bullet points or an ugly fast draft of an email. Don’t think. Just write quickly.

  • Then prompt Copilot/ChatGPT/Gemini with “Make this better.”

  • Or, steer it in another direction with “Make this shorter.” Or “Make this nicer.” Or “Make this casual.”

  • Then, course correct with another short one: “Great. Now, make it more ____”

Simple can solve a lot.

We also shared some practical and actionable tips in this episode on how you can use different AI tools to read and (help) respond to your emails.

3 – AI helps humans better understand humans 🚶

Seems backward, right?

How can our Robotic, LLM Overlords actually help us better understand humans?

Kimberly put us in the position of an average product manager.

Check this:

  • You’re reading customer insights, trying to decipher feedback and insights.

  • You’re trying to understand reviews and feedback forms to inform you on future product developments.

  • You’re talking with current enterprise customers on the issues they’re facing with your product.

Guess what happens in all of these situations, even to the BEST product managers?

Bias.

Kimberly said it’s human nature for product managers to have a bit of bias when going through these steps.

You know — rose-colored glasses about every piece of data, feedback, survey or customer complaint about your product. You may scoff at some insights, write-off some complaints, or spin some piece of feedback cuz this product (that they totally don’t understand!) is your baby.

Like… they’re just not holding the phone right! Duh.

Instead, Kimberly offered tapping into AI for more neutral product feedback, faster insights, and the ability to turn unstructured data into structured next steps for your product.

Try this: How can you specifically use AI to better understand your customers or the product you’re helping manage and develop?

This article from G2 is a great guide. It shows you how to simplify the process of using AI to better understand customer and product data.

And if you work in Product Management and are also a big fan of Microsoft, then we’ve got a throwback episode here that’ll be right up your alley with Rolly Seth, another Senior Product Manager at Microsoft.
