1. OpenAI and Bain Boost AI Partnership 🤝

OpenAI and Bain & Co. are rolling out tailored AI tools for industries like retail and life sciences, aiming to transform how businesses leverage artificial intelligence. With Bain's 13,000 consultants now equipped with ChatGPT Enterprise, the partnership seeks to provide customized solutions that go beyond standard offerings.

The move comes at a crucial time as OpenAI reports a surge in business clients, reflecting growing interest and investment in AI technologies

2. X's Privacy Policy Gets Updated To Allow AI Training 👀

Social network X has updated its Privacy Policy, allowing third-party collaborators to use user data for training AI models unless users choose to opt out. This change hints at a strategy to monetize data similar to what Reddit and various media outlets have explored, as the company seeks new revenue streams amid advertiser withdrawals.

The updated policy, effective November 15, also revises how long user information is retained and reminds users that even deleted content may linger elsewhere on the internet. With these developments, X is clearly positioning itself in the competitive AI landscape, raising questions about user privacy and the future of data sharing in social networks.

3. Google Shake-Up in AI Leadership 👥

In a significant reshuffle, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that Prabhakar Raghavan, the head of search and ads, will transition to the role of Chief Technologist, while Nick Fox steps in as his successor. This change comes as Google intensifies its focus on artificial intelligence, with Raghavan credited for pioneering AI features like Smart Reply in Gmail and enhancements across various platforms.

Additionally, Pichai revealed that the Gemini app team will merge with Google DeepMind, aiming to streamline AI model deployment and enhance product momentum. As Google navigates ongoing antitrust challenges, these leadership shifts could reshape the company's trajectory in the competitive AI landscape.

4. X's Transparency Report Raises Eyebrows 📄

X (formerly Twitter) has released its first transparency report in two years, revealing a staggering 224 million user reports in the first half of 2024, yet only a modest increase in account suspensions. Alarmingly, while reports of child exploitation soared, actions against hate speech plummeted, with only 2,361 accounts suspended for hateful conduct compared to over 104,000 in late 2021.

This shift highlights X's growing reliance on AI for content moderation, raising questions about its effectiveness and the ethical implications of allowing machines to make moral decisions.

5. OpenAI's Patent Promise: Commitment or Confusion? 🤔

In a recent statement, OpenAI vowed to use its patents solely for defensive purposes, aiming to promote innovation and collaboration within the tech community. However, experts like Mike Borella argue that the pledge lacks clarity and could easily be manipulated to target competitors or critics, raising skepticism about its true intent.

With a limited patent portfolio and a reliance on trade secrets, OpenAI's commitment appears more like a public relations move than a robust strategy to foster competition. As this unfolds, those in the tech industry may want to keep a close eye on how these pledges translate into real-world practices.

6. Microsoft's OpenAI Equity Talks Heat Up 💰

As Microsoft races against a two-year deadline, negotiations over its potential equity stake in the restructured, for-profit OpenAI are intensifying. The tech giant has invested nearly $14 billion, and with OpenAI now positioned as the second-most-valuable startup in the U.S., the stakes are high.

Key discussions include the distribution of equity among CEO Sam Altman and OpenAI employees, as well as Microsoft's governance rights once the transition is complete. This pivotal moment not only shapes the future of AI but could also influence the career trajectories of many in the tech industry.

🦾How You Can Leverage:

It’s been a hot minute since an AI product has gone this viral.

Aside from the ChatGPT moment of November 2022, the recent surge of NotebookLM has potentially been the biggest splash of any Generative AI product.

From highlights on CNBC and the New York Times to Yahoo Finance and Forbes, NotebookLM has literally been a media mainstay.

And this week, Google announced some huge changes and updates to the product: customizable AI audio overviews and launching a new business version.

This NotebookLM thing is moving fast.

Don’t worry — on today’s show, we took another deep dive today into the deep dive maker and AI superstar NotebookLM.

We covered the basics and explored all the new updates.

Ready to get the juiciest takeaways?

1-2-33333333333 👇

1 – Stay Grounded with NotebookLM 😶‍🌫️

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

We know the customizable AI audio overviews are the show-stopper.

But, whether you’re brand new to NotebookLM or kinda a pro, we gotta stay grounded in this point.

NotebookLM works much different than other front-facing LLMs like ChatGPT, Claude or even Google’s own Gemini.

That’s because NotebookLM’s main chat capabilities REQUIRE your data to get started.

And in your text-based questioning, NotebookLM is only gonna answer questions if you’ve shared source information that can answer.

In other words, most LLMs rely on both their training data and external web calls. NotebookLM is a grounded model that uses a form of RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation) to answer questions.

Try this:

Don’t worry, we’re getting to the updates. But, they’ll all make MUCH more sense if you even ground yourself a bit more.

Make sure to check out our first deep dive on NotebookLM to get caught up on the basics.

2 – Customize your audio knowledge 🎯

Let’s dish it real here.

We’re not fans of the front-end of Google Gemini.

But we loooooooove NotebookLM.

One of the biggest reasons is the AI Audio Overviews, sometimes called Deep Dives.

In short, you can dump loads of your data or company docs (millions of words) into a Notebook. Then, two AI hosts will create a short (5-15 minute podcast) on your docs.

The new update allows users to customize the AI podcast in what Google calls slipping notes to the host.

Try this:

We’ve had mixed results with this feature so far. In our testing on today’s livestream, it handled everything pretty well!

Here’s the custom instructions we gave it:

- Please start the deep dive audio overview with a intro to project managers and why they should learn cribbage

- Please start with a shocking fact that grabs attention and a funny joke

- Please have the hosts be witty

- Please end the deep dive audio overview with a pirate joke that resonates with project managers trying to learn cribbage

And, you can download the deep dive here to see how it did. (We’d say it CRUSHED this test!)

Our first test, though? Not quite as stellar, as we ran into some pretty harsh hallucinations while customizing the Audio Overview.

Although, the text-based queries still passed with flying colors.

3 – Will your business grab a Notebook? 🧍

Google announced NotebookLM is coming for your business.

As in, they announced a pilot program for NotebookLM for business.

Right now, the details are light, but here’s our thoughts.

So far, NotebookLM has been free for everyone to use. Obviously, that’s not sustainable. As we’re pretty sure allowing millions of people to upload unlimited docs with millions of words of context ain’t cheap.

So, what’s the play here?

And why is Google investing heavily in NotebookLM when it’s already got its headliner LLM in Gemini?

It could be because so far nobody has been able to catch ChatGPT and they’re taking a different approach with a grounded model.

Our thought is Google sees NotebookLM has been going mega viral, and this is another competitor in the race to acquire users and retain them.

Try this:

So, should your company sign up for the business pilot? Right now, we see no reason not to.

Unless your team has the tech chops to fine-tune models and work some RAG magic, the NotebookLM biz pilot seems like a no-brainer for most companies.

Sure, it’ll cost in the future.

And right now, Google says it doesn’t train on your company’s data.

And once/if we get access to the NotebookLM Business pilot, we’ll be back to update you on our recommendations.

But right now, there’s really no other easier and more accessible option to use a powerful language model grounded in your data.
