OpenAI's Sora: First steps toward AGI? 😳

🎥 Sora's impact on AGI, the fastest LLM, GPT4-Turbo gets a boost, Pentagon's AI military plans, and more

Outsmart The Future

Sup y’all 👋

This one’s kinda deep.

If you care about keeping up with AI and how it’ll impact society, today’s show is required.

Yes, some hot takes and opinions. (It’s #HotTakeTuesday after all.)

But, we brought receipts and laid out the path toward AGI.

(You know, that Artificial General Intelligence thing where the AI bots become smarter than the average human for daily tasks.)

Kinda weird and scary. But important to listen to. OpenAI literally said that Sora is a step toward AGI. So you should be paying attention.

If you have questions, just reply to this email and I’ll try my best to answer them. We’re here to help.

🦾How You Can Leverage:

Wait, whuuuuu?

So the OpenAI Sora thing was about more than video?

Absolutely.

Don’t get us wrong, we tackled the extremely mind-boggling quality of Sora’s text-to-video capabilities.

But we wanted to take a deeper dive today on what it all actually means.

Over the past few months, we’ve been keeping a sharp eye on what OpenAI is working on, what they’re announcing, and what they’re not talking about.

(And, as always, bring the dang receipts)

Let’s break it down. 👇

1 – Sora’s quality is unmatched 🧑‍🎨

If you’ve seen the text-to-video samples from OpenAI’s new Sora model, you already know this.

But it’s not even in the same league as other text-to-video players. Or even the same stratosphere.

Sora offers 1 minute (and multi-angle!) generations in a single prompt, whereas most current GenAI video models offer 4-16 seconds.

And the quality?

Sheeeeeesh.

Try this: Want to see for yourself? Here’s a little quick breakdown we did.

And if you want a bit more depth JUST on the current comparisons, we’ve got you on that one, too.

2 – Sora is a step toward AGI 🚶‍♂️

(Old man Wilson shaking his fist at the young Billy Boys on his lawn)

These dang kids are missing the point.

Y’all.

Can we be real for a second?

Why is (hardly) no one talking about Sora’s overt connection to AGI? Is it because the videos are so dang shiny? Is it because the Billy Boy “Influencers” are too busy pre-selling you Sora Prompts?

(They definitely didn’t read the research papers. And yeah, they’re definitely gonna try and sell you Sora prompts lolz.)

Let’s set the record straight.

And this isn’t the instance of ‘lettuce bust out this CVS-length receipt’ to prove a paper trail kind of setting the record straight.

OpenAI straight up told us in their research paper. In black and white. Clear as day.

Sora is a world simulator. (We talked about what that meant.)

And when you look at EVERYTHING else that has happened over the past month, the writing is legit on the wall.

Try this: We promise this Sora research paper is worth your time.

Not only does it better explain how OpenAI is able to get these shocking results (and explain the need for $7 trillion worth of compute) but it also lays out in plain English that Sora is not (just) a text-to-video model.

It’s a model to better understand how the world works.

(Again, a huge, In ALL CAPS, literally-admitting step toward AGI)

3 – Follow the leaders 🕵️‍♂️

Another take seemingly not on anyone’s radar — OpenAI and Microsoft are poised to be an untouchable combo.

As we’ve talked about before, Microsoft reportedly has a 49% ownership stake in OpenAI after investing billions, and has baked GPT4 into its impressive Copilot lineup.

Try this: TBH, we don’t see any other way forward in 2024 that doesn’t involve a sizable acquisition from a Trillionaire Tech Titan.

The stakes are too high. And the (current) quality gap between OpenAI+Microsoft is currently too wide for any single entity to close. Wait, didn’t we already talk about this months ago? (Like, in 2023?) About the rise of AI video and an inevitable headline-grabbing acquisition in the GenAI space? We did.

Go give that a watch/listen. (Oh, and let us know where you think we’re wrong!)

Numbers to watch

$2.1 Billion

Microsoft invests $2.1 Billion in Spain for AI infrastructure.
