1. ElevenLabs Hits Unicorn Status with $80 Million Funding Round 🦄

London-based AI startup ElevenLabs just raised a whopping $80 million in Series B funding, led by venture capitalist Andreessen Horowitz. With its cutting-edge generative AI technology for creating AI-generated voices in different languages and accents, this two-year-old firm is now valued at a stunning $11 billion. From dubbing movies to social media campaigns, ElevenLabs is revolutionizing the way we consume and create content with its AI-powered speech generation tools.

2. Runway Releases Multi Motion Brush 🖌

Runway has just dropped a game-changing tool for video creators. Their Gen-2 foundation model, powered by AI, now features the Multi Motion Brush, allowing users to add multiple directions and types of motion to their videos. No more settling for one static motion - now you can make clouds soar, faces turn, and skies dance with just a few digital brush strokes.

3. Sam Altman Plans to Raise Billions for Chip Venture 💵

OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman is on a mission to secure massive funding from global investors to set up a network of semiconductor fabrication plants. This ambitious plan aims to address the concern that the demand for AI-related chips may outstrip supply in the near future. Altman has been holding confidential conversations with potential investors, including G42 and SoftBank Group Corp. The project would involve collaborating with top chip manufacturers to establish a global scope of chip fabrication.

4. Mind-Reading AI Hat Decodes Silent Thoughts🧠

Researchers at the GrapheneX-UTS Human-centric Artificial Intelligence Center have developed an incredible portable AI hat called BrainGPT that can translate silent thoughts into readable text. This groundbreaking wearable technology is a game-changer for people who are unable to speak due to illness or injury, such as stroke or paralysis. The device records and translates brain activity using electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, without the need for invasive implants.

5. Blockchain to the Rescue: Preventing Bias in AI Data 🦸

Executives at the World Economic Forum in Davos revealed that blockchain technology could be the ultimate solution to combat bias and misinformation in AI models. By storing training data on the blockchain, developers can ensure transparency and track the data used to train AI systems. If AI starts “hallucinating” or providing false information, the technology allows for rolling back to a previous version of the AI.

1 – Zuckerberg going all in on AI 🤖

Metaverse who?

Mark Zuckerberg is going all in on the next phase of AI, which is working toward Artificial General Intelligence.

What it is:
In short, AGI is when AI goes a step further and becomes superhuman. Right now, our AI systems are generally built by humans for a task.

AGI, though, is when AI systems become smarter than the humans that build them and can perform intellectual tasks better than humans. And, in theory, AGI can function and improve on its own without humans.

What it means:
Scary and exciting things.

The fact that Zuck publicly stated Meta is working toward AGI is a pretty big deal. (Aside from the big bump in Meta’s stock price after the announcement. Meta is also working on a follow-up to its Llama 2 large language model, a leading LLM for the open source space.

Oh, and Zuckerberg announced the company is investing billions in GPU chips to achieve the feat. And that caused NVIDIA’s stock to go soaring this past week, as we predicted hours after the announcement.

We hope that the race to AGI will bring forth exciting, life-changing innovation. And while there’s new opportunities, AGI means tons of new societal threats.

The race is on:
Now we have two tech titans openly focusing on building AI systems smarter than humans. (And Tesla’s Elon Musk.) Years ago, most experts believed that AGI would take decades to arrive.

But with Zuck and crew now making AGI a main focus, many experts agree that the timeline is now a decade or less.

2 – Microsoft releases Copilot Pro 💻️

Welp, this was a big announcement that many didn’t see coming. Microsoft announced and released Copilot Pro, a new offering that sits between its free Copilot AI search and enterprise Microsoft 365 Copilot offerings.

To understand what it is and why it matters, let’s break down the three Copilot variations:

Free Copilot — Formerly called Bing Chat, Copilot is now the de facto Microsoft AI offering.

Powered by OpenAI’s GPT4, Copilot combines traditional Bing search with a smart AI assistant. You can also create AI images for free inside of Copilot with DallE.

Copilot Pro — Here’s the new item on the menu.

In short, the Pro version brings the smart assistant to the apps you use everyday, like Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook. Also, Pro gives you priority access to the upgraded GPT4-Turbo model, and faster access to DallE.

Pro costs $20/mo, and also requires a (roughly) $10/month Microsoft 365 Personal or Family Subscription to work with the Microsoft suite of apps.

Microsoft 365 Copilot — This is where Copilot for business comes in.

The enterprise-friendly version of 365 Copilot allows Microsoft 365 Business and Enterprise users to tap into everything Copilot has to offer. Previously, companies had to purchase a minimum of 300 licenses to use this version, but Microsoft recently dropped that minimum.

3 – Runway releases multi brush tool 🖌

AI creativity is bumped up a notch now with the latest update from Runway.

If you’re new to Runway, we’ve got a guide to get you up to speed. But in short, Runway is what would happen if Photoshop was a video-first, AI-powered tool and it lived online.

With the new multi motion brush, Runway users can bring different motion types to multiple parts of an image.

Go check out this walk-through from former Everyday AI guest Rory Flynn on how to use the feature.

4 – Samsung releases its AI phone 📱

Samsung is the first major player to bring an AI phone to market, as they just released details at their Galaxy Unpacked event.

With the Samsung Galaxy S24 announcement, consumers will get their first major market look at Edge AI, or on-device AI.

We took a deep dive on the topic recently, but the S24 will bring AI to the physical device and out of the cloud. AI features include ‘Circle to Search’ with Google, a call assistant and more

Pre-orders for the phone are already live, and it’s expected to be in stores by January 31.

5 – ElevenLabs reaches Unicorn status 🦄

The Generative AI scene has its newest unicorn.

ElevenLabs, a leading text to speech AI platform, just announced its latest fundraising round of $80 million.

The latest news also brings its valuation to more than $1 billion, joining other GenAI unicorns such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Hugging Face, Runway, Synthesis and others.
