🤷‍♂️ What’s Going On and Why It Matters:

Is GenAI bad for the creative industry?

Should we all be using AI tools to bolster our creativity with the paste of a prompt, or should we keep it old school and create by hand?

After making some predictions yesterday about how GenAI shows up in 2024, we tackled some tough questions today about AI and creativity.

What’s the best way to ACTUALLY put GenAI to use in your workflow?

Is Generative AI changing what it means to be creative?

Is it cheating if we use these AI tools?

We didn’t ponder these burning questions alone, as we tapped into the GenAI insights of Brian Sykes, AI Whisperer at AI Explore.

With about 25 years of professional experience in the creative space, Brian offered a unique perspective on how GenAI is impacting fields such as marketing, advertising, communications and more.

Our takeaway from today’s conversation?

GenAI has leveled the playing field. Fosho.

Tasks that used to take countless hours to master can now be automagically done in seconds. (Talking about you, Canva Magic Eraser! Why’d we waste like 298 hours doing this manually in the 2010s?)

But we learned a WHOLE lot more.

Some key takeaways:

  • Generative AI allowing for earlier engagement in the creative process

  • Concept of reverse engineering to achieve desired outcomes in GenAI systems

  • Questioning if technology has leveled the playing field for creative work

  • Generative AI as an amplifier for creative professionals

  • Importance of providing quality input to generative AI systems

  • Decreased emphasis on prompting with newer versions of AI tools

Yeah, this was a banger episode for creatives and everyday people who are taking their first creative steps.

With a straight up onslaught of useful info on all things AI and creativity, how do we take advantage of it all?

🦾How You Can Leverage:

It’s tough.

We get it.

Keeping up with all of the advancements in the AI and Creative spaces is legit overwhelming.

Like, as soon as you’ve got a grasp on this AI whatchamacallit, there’s a new GPT-powered thingamadoo over there.

Let’s keep this as simple as possible.

The world of creativity is changing quickly. You can view that two ways:

- Oh dang. I/my company/my department spent so much time investing in old school creative techniques. Let’s fight off this new wave and kick it old school.

OR

- Welp. A new world of creativity is one button press away. Better learn and explore.

If you’re in column one — sorry shorty. Can’t help.

If you’re in column two — let’s break down how to tackle this brave new creative world.

1 – Embrace GenAI creativity 👨‍🎨

Is it wrong to use Generative AI tools for creativity?

It’s definitely a topic of hot debate.

After all, not all creatives and artists are thrilled about GenAI tipping the industry on its head. But here’s the cold hard facts, y’all. Like it or not, tools like ChatGPT, Midjourney, Runway, and Dall-E are the future of creativity. The biggest creative companies in the world (Adobe, Canva, Google, Microsoft, etc.) have all tripled down on Generative AI.

If you wanna keep your place in the creative space, you’ve gotta read the (creative) writing on the (AI designed) wall.

Try this:
Too many buzzwords above? Don’t worry. We’ve already covered the basics of some of the easiest to use GenAI systems for creatives. Here’s some must-watch episodes and AI in 5 recaps:

2 – Prompting is the new creativity ⌨️

Brian had some great takes on prompting. We may think of prompting as something boring, or technical.

Not so fast.

Proper prompting is actually the new creative super power. Sure, AI models are actually getting better at improving our prompts by default, but proper prompting (and prompt engineering) is one of the most crucial future skills. And, it’s a skill that takes practice, patience and creativity to master.

Just like what Woozie said! 👇

3 – The human role is changing 🧒

If all of these AI models can create legit stunning images, videos and designs in seconds, what are us humans here for?

It’s a legit question worth exploring. Jordan and Brian thought out loud about how the human role may be changing, but not erased.

Instead of being the entity ‘putting pen to paper’ in terms of delivering creative work, humans may start to take on more of an Art Director or Creative Consultant work while working alongside GenAI systems.

Don’t get us wrong. We ain’t saying humans will no longer be the ones actually creating photos/videos/presentations. But, we see a future where humans are generally the guiding hand with AI doing the heavy creative lifting.

Try this:
Don’t agree? All gucci. Reply and let us know why. Also, there’s some great deep dives on what the future of creative work looks like. And trust us… it’s different. Go explore this piece on if AI will kill human creativity, and then dive into this article on the AI creative revolution.
